TNF: Browns At Steelers

Dick Butkus, Jack Lambert, Leroy "Too Tall" Jones, Carl Eller, Randy White, LC Greenwood, John Matuszak, Ted Hendricks, Bruce Smith, Otis Sistrunk, Merlin Olsen, Howie Long, Deacon Jones all make Harrison look tame. Different time I guess, but that was the football I grew up on. I still think Goodell is a titty baby.

:D

Neg Rep for naming hard hitters and leaving off The Assassin.

Oh I agree, Goodell and the league have gone totally belly up and are pussifying the league.

That said I do think any of the guys you mentioned would have played differently if they could have seen into the future and seen how there peers bodys and minds have deteriorated due to all the blows to the head they took. Some of these guys are really sad to see now.

The league has gone too far but that hit by Harrison needs to be stopped no matter where the line. You can't lead with your helmet.

I find it all too humors that all the Pittsburgh fans think that old school football, where every thing goes should be allowed but when it comes to hockey they whine that things have gotten too violent because their pansy boy can't get over his headaches. Either get your cheap shot artist Harrison under control or tell Mario to stop sending crying letters to the NHL office about dirty play. Can't have it both ways.

Not all Steelers fans think helmet to helmet is ok Skins. I think leading with helmet is dangerous for both players. I also stated that Harrison is stupid for his hit on McCoy, he will probably be suspended and our defense needs his pass rush. When I think of concussions suffered by the "old school" players Mike Webster comes to mind. The head slapping and years of pounding on the line of scrimmage really cost him. Now if you knock the shit out of a wide receiver by driving your helmet into his chest (where the ball is) that's football. I love football and have been watching it for 40 years or more, this Steeler fan knows good football is a smart, hard hitting, and highly skilled game. Harrison is a idiot for these hits. He is about what he wants not the good of the team or anybody else for that matter. I could care less about hockey injuries, those dudes are insane. The sport could be so much better if they would get the "professional wrestling" fighting mentality out and let them fast break across the two friggin lines or whatever the rule is. BTW my dad was a Skin's fan and I always pulled for them because we both hate the Cowgirlz. Keep on hatin' on my Steelers and their fans, hopefully the Skins will be relevant again in the near future and we both can delight when you kick the Kowboize ass.

Pittsburgh fans get upset by the inconsistency of how the NFL calls those plays. In a lot of cases the offensive player ducks and creates the dangerous situation, and the defender is supposed to react. In that hit, Harrison barely tilts his helmet down if at all but everyone on here is acting like it was atrocious. In the highlights of the game, Deon (I believe) is saying it was a clean hit (~4:38). It certainly does not look bad at full speed.

He'll get fined for it because that's the the NFL will do, but is the NFL supposed to get rid of all non-tackle hitting? Really?

Same with the NHL. The hit Crosby took in the Classic was to the back of his head. It was called inadvertent, like when Ngata swung wildy and broke Ben's nose.

McCoy never ducked and Harrison was going high the whole way. That's what makes this one so bad. Not to mention it was a borderline late hit. That was not one of those "bang bang" plays that is complained about where the defender can't pull up in time. Harrison never had any intention of hitting him below the shoulders. He led with his helmet and went high the whole way. He should and will be suspended. Absolutely inexcusable play from him.

Many guys who have lifelong brain damage and other health problems.

Once the QB leaves the pocket and tucks the ball running, he's a RB is he not?? That's what McCoy did, then at the last sec he pulled up and lobbed the ball. Does he get to go back to getting total QB protections all of the sudden just because he untucks the ball? That's pretty unfair.

Some do, some don't. The problem I have with all of this is the concussion/brain damage issue that causes these long term problems isn't even related to the hits like last night. The problem is constant microconcussions. In football it's linemen knocking heads. In soccer it's heading the ball, which is why soccer players show greater brain damage on average.

Removing hits like Harrison's doesn't even address the real problem IMO.

So it's ok to headhunt as long as it's not a QB? Leading with the crown of your helmet to another player's head on anyone is not allowed. He made no effort to make a proper tackle. This doesn't have anything to do with QB protection(I realize that since it is a QB it will be more scrutinized). It's about Harrison leading with the crown of his helmet into another player's head without any attempt to avoid it.

So his thought process of seeing the QB tuck the ball so that makes it ok to go high helmet-to-helmet is ok to you? That hit is 100% avoidable if he leads with his shoulder into Colt's numbers. No excuse.

McCoy's father is ripping the Browns apart for putting Colt back in. Apparently Colt doesn't remember what happened between being hit and the game being over. So much for the NFL looking out for concussions.

Yeah they showed Colt's face up close after he got put back in when he was taking the shotgun snap a couple times and he just looked out of it, glassy eyes and everything. He was only out for two plays and they were taping his hand for a lot of that time so I don't see how they could've properly determined whether he had a concussion. I caught an elbow to the head when I played basketball in high school and the concussion tests I got took at least 10 minutes where I had to remember and recite some phrase in addition to a couple other things. I hope the NFL tests don't consist of "what is your name?" and "how many fingers am I holding up?"

Isn't the NFL supposed to have a concussion coordinator at each game who is supposed to be checking that the proper tests are being carried out?

Browns said they checked him and he was fine. LOL. It's kind of bullshit when the organization is the one paying the doctors to clear a guy. You can't watch that hit and clear him to play. He might not have been knocked out cold, but it was clear he was done.

I'm still amazed at that Harrison hit. It wasn't one of those bang-bang, quick plays where I feel bad for the safety who couldn't change the hit soon enough. Harrison just headhunted against a slow, upright player.

Seriousl - I understand wanting to make a big hit, but why go for the head? Why not just pop McCoy in the stomach or without leading with your own head? All Harrison has to do is do something else with his helmet.

Really a terrible hit. It's exactly the kind the league needs to remove. The fines don't seem to be working... maybe a suspension is needed eventually?
