Official Wake - Yale Game Thread

A win is not a win...lol

I'm sorry, but Skip is dead and we have another coach now. Rough, but that's the way it is. We won the game and nobody gives a crap how the hell we won it.

I can't speak for the "neo-Staak era" because I never saw him coach.

The schedule isn't a strong one, but it is one that is necessary at this juncture in the rebuilding process.

Listen to the little person: It's time to mooooooooooooooove oooooooon!

our depth problem was highlighted again. When the starters ran out of gas, we lost momentum. That problem should be solved next year.

Yep. I was at the game until my parents decided it was over and made the brothers and I leave with about 9 minutes left :rulz:

When the WF starters were on the floor at the start of the 1st and 2nd half there was no question who was the better team. Glad WF got the win but wish they had blown them out just for the confidence. Certainly see improvement, and that's nice to see.

Nikita BLOWS. How do you start at PF in a major conference and shoot 34% from the field?

That's another thing I wanted to mention. Time after time the offense put Nikita in position to make layups or short jumpers. I can think of six shots from either at the rim or in the lane where Nikita missed each shot. Fortunately for us, he went 2-3 on layups late in the game which helped us hold on.

Nikita misses more layups than any college player I've seen at any level. It's almost comical. If he makes the average percentage that a D1 starting forward should make, we're so far ahead of Yale that any comeback wouldn't have mattered.

I can't recall seeing a big who can actually make solid moves to the goal but miss the shot at such a high percentage.

Amazing that [Redacted] can't reign in Nikita.

Sucks you weren't a student when we actually won games for more than a week. Not my fault.

Stop enabling future loser-ing. That's what neo-Staak means. Creating a new generation of fans that have limited expectations and minimal interest.

Seems we still haven't played a full 40 minutes of good basketball once in the 43 games that Jeff [Redacted] has been head coach.

It's amazing that two guys that are Mods/Admins on a Wake Forest Message Board just do not get what it takes to build a basketball program from the ground up. If I was Jeff [Redacted], I would be awfully worried that these two guys are so obsessed with him.

CJ and Travis say hi.

Building from the ground up? You do realize he inherited a team that had been ranked no. 1 two years before he arrived, right? With an incoming top-12 recruiting class gift-wrapped for him? You're making it sound like he showed up and there was nothing but an empty gym. He's had a tough go of it, for sure. He hasn't helped matters, either.

First, I was an alumnus during the Staak era and attending Wake as a grad student so I sat through two years of those games. So I love it when some people who might have been in diapers tell me what it was like and how it relates to the current team.

Just keep talking.

Fairly clear that no matter what this team does it will not be good enough. I can predict that if we win more than 3 or 4 ACC games this year it will be 'the ACC stinks this year we didn't beat dook or UNC'.

The basic fact is the team needs to mature. We've gone from losing games like last night to winning them. The next step is to finish off teams like last night when we are controlling the game.

I'm guessing some people are commenting just on the score and didn't bother to watch the game (especially since these negative posters were not posting during the game). For 30 minutes we follow the game plan and run our offense, then we stopped. Started taking quick shots and making difficult passes. Yale hits a few in a row and suddenly we are in a game.

It's maturity.

The VT game will be our first real measuring stick of where this team is at. Home ACC game that we have a chance to win.

Oh man I'm so old and cool! Other than the opening ststement that's a valid post.

We absolutely manhandled a decent Yale team last night with all of our key reserves all having off nights, only to completely lose focus when we thought it was over and give away most of a very comfortable lead. If TC makes his free throws and we don't give them the last wide open 3 point shot (lost in that is we were smart enough not to even be close enough to the shooter to get a foul called w/ a 4 point lead w/ .2 second left), then we win by 6 after losing focus and everybody is much happier than with a 1 point win that was much better than that.

I also think CJ wasn't right at the end. Didn't he go to the locker room and before that asked to come out late in the game? Don't know if he was just tired or playing through a virus or something.

The only coaching complaint I have is I did not like some of the substitutions. I really do not like having Ty, AF, Chase and Green on the floor at the same time, and I think we had that at one point. He needs to mix the subs up and not play a full 2nd team at any time. There should never be less than 3 starters on the floor with this team.

You're a fool if you actually believe this drivel you're typing.
Who on this team was actually on the team when they were ranked #1? Only one guy and he's our best player and only upperclassmen. Now we have Nikita playing PF instead of James Johnson or Aminu. Good lord. There's a difference. Our back up PF scored like 12 points/ game in high school and gives up 20# to many small forwards.

Also, that top 12 recruiting class? Not so good. It's not too hard to see the deficiencies in Carson's and Tony's games. They have potential and both are showing improvement but I guess let's blame the coach because we're not top 25 with them. Travis is a heck of a player but he's not been at his best the last 3 games. The other 2 talents are obviously gone and I actually think that's a great thing but something other coaches might not have had the balls to do.

I'm not saying Bz is great or anything but it's absurd to keep blaming him for everything when he has exceeded most expectations this year and isn't going anywhere.

You were an alumnus? What happened....did you die? I think you still are an alumnus.

My point was that there was an established Wake brand that [Redacted] inherited - and a program. He didn't start from scratch. You're the fool if you couldn't pick up on that. (Namecalling, FTW!)

Of course Wake had a brand. Unfortunately the cupboard was at best half full. Fortunately, Wake's brand (+/- Bz's talent) allowed us to get next year's recruiting class. We will know in 1-3 years if Bz has what it takes to continue to add to Wake's reputation or if he's hurting it. So far, I'm not sure we can say anything other than he looks a little dweebie and isn't a sharp dresser. That stuff is pretty irrelevant if you put a good team on the court though.

I like the way we play defense. Just need better interior defenders. We get pretty good shots. I could see us being winners with him as coach- this in the future and has nothing to do with our current 9-4 record.

Define "winners." I definitely see him getting us to NCAAs two out of every five years and finishing in the top half of the ACC three out of every five years. Personally, I consider that mediocre and think Wake can do much better - hell, I've seen it - but other fans disagree. The expectations in our fanbase vary wildly, something that has a lot to do w/ when a particular fan became a fan of Wake basketball.

Real question: have you ever watched a Staak game or are you an alum who hopped on the bandwagon during our program's renaissance and think you're special because you never knew what it was like when times weren't so great?

If you have indeed experienced Staak, watched a game last year, and don't see improvement/admit your statements are hyperbole, then I don't know what to tell you. WS born and raised, and I'm proud of our guys.

How many wins did you have us down for, Irish?
