Costa Concordia (Cruise Ship) Sinks

I can't wait for the Discovery channel special on how they are going to tow this mother outta there.

Have they said that's what they're going to do? I've been assuming this whole time that they'll have to dismantle it and take it out in pieces. That thing is filled with water.... no way it moves.

I wonder who insured this ship. That is going to be a large dollar settlement.

I saw a story on one of the entertainers (violinist) who was helping people off, then went back to his room to save his violin, and they recovered his body yesterday.
This guy:

Witnesses say he put lifejackets on crying children and after they were all properly secured, he went back to his cabin for his violin.

here's a good detailed article. I guess he did turn towards shore after tearing the hull...the turd on CNN last night made it seem like it happened right there. Either way, he'd been even closer before...775 feet from shore recently.

Holy shit. Has this been mentioned yet?

It was also claimed yesterday that the theme tune from Titanic, My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion, was playing on the ship at the precise moment it began to take on water.

I am no expert at salvage, but I would assume they would weld makeshift patches over the holes and pump the water out. Ff they wanted to salvage the whole thing.

Part of me can't comprehend how anyone (at a relatively young age) would die from this accident - but one of the last photos from that Boston paper shows what looks to be a complete clusterfuck on the deck - with thousands trying to get off at the same time.

I had a few thoughts like that as well but thinking about elderly people, injured people, etc. Also of the 1,000 or so crew members, I think entertainers outnumbered actual technician type so it sounds like very few people knew what to do. They hadn't had a drill yet (it was scheduled for the next day) so the crew that did know what to do were working with passengers who didn't understand the plan.

AND because it was a very international group of people I read a few accounts where information was only being delivered in one language (Italian I guess?) and not everyone on board knew the language.

I went on a Carnival cruise last January. Even after the evacuation drill, I don't think I would have known what to do.

not everyone can swim either. wat a mess.

How could the captain have sent out an SOS signal? Didn't you hear him? He fell into a life boat! So unlucky...

This is exactly what they're going to do. It will most likely be repaired and put back in service.

Srsly, I think it would be awesome to do that kind of stuff.

Wonder how hard it would be to get into a naval engineering school.

Let's be honest here...the elderly and infants should be last off the board. THe elderly are going to die soon and have no productive years ahead of them. It costs hundreds of thousands if not millions to raise and educate a child. That child may die, be incompetent or become incarcerated during his lifetime. Too much risk. That guy's violin is probably worth more than the children he saved.

Save the single white men (sorry other races) first. They have the greatest earning power and highest productivity. Then save the single white females. These groups have proven they can stay out of trouble and survive.

The ideal person to save is a white man, who has a family that isn't on the boat. The tragedy won't affect his productivity going forward. Same with white women. Those are the highest earners.
