Keep the tournament out of Greensboro

Coliseum is far too small, no places to stay or eat nearby, and not close to any of the campuses. Poor attendance over the years as well. GSO is a terrible choice.

The ACC was created in Greensboro and that is one of the main reasons why they want to keep it there. But if you want to look at it from a ticket sales POV, Duke and UNC are just down the road and Greensboro will sell twice the tickets to the entire weekend than any other site.

The 2001 ACC Tournament still stands as the most-attended conference basketball tournament in NCAA history for both total attendance (182,525) and per session attendance (36,505).

A year ago 158,112 fans attended the ACC Tournament held in the Georgia Dome for an average session attendance of 26,352 - both totals are the second-highest marks in NCAA history.

Granted thats a couple years old but I think that makes my point pretty well

Great stats from the 2001 ACCT there JD. Because today's ACC and economy match that of 2001.

Until the rest of the conference stops sucking balls it makes sense to be in Greensboro. In Greensboro you have 4-6 schools that can make the trip over if their team makes the weekend. Once you go to Tampa, DC and even Atlanta its a much harder trip. Also, Thursday really kills the tournament. It used to be half the schools were still in it by Saturday, so at least half the fans would stick around. Now with 12+ 2/3 of the fans are gone on Friday and that leaves a lot of seats to fill in for the weekend.

30.4 mi from Wake
54.8 mi from Duke
54.2 mi from UNC-CH
77.2 mi from State
144 mi from VPI
181 mi from UVA
220 mi from Clemson

Find a site with a coliseum that is closer to more ACC schools

In 2009 these were the ACC standings:
2008–09 ACC men's basketball standings
v ·t ·e Conf Overall
Team W L PCT W L PCT
#2 North Carolina 13 3 .813 34 4 .895
#6 Duke† 11 5 .688 30 7 .811
#12 Wake Forest 11 5 .688 24 7 .774
#16 Florida State 10 6 .625 25 10 .714
#24 Clemson 9 7 .563 23 9 .719

3 NC schools, a SC school and FSU. Short trips for all 5 of those schools. I can see why the numbers were good.

The area surrounding the GSO Coliseum sucks like a hoover, and the arena is a bit dated. Otherwise, the history, central location, proximity to most schools, and even arena size are all positives.

I'd rather it be in Charlotte than Atlanta, though admittedly for selfish reasons as it's still closer to me in case Wake gets good again in the near future.

Duke and UNC also get some extra practice at their first and second round (I guess second and third round now) NCAA site sometimes, too.

I cant believe anybody is defending having the thing in Atlanta over Greensboro. Nobody goes when its in Atlanta. They had to move it out of the Georgia Dome because of how ridiculously empty the place was, maybe it will look a little bit better in Phillips.

The final four was ridiculously empty at the GA Dome, It's an awful place to watch a basketball game.

I didn't realize Charlotte and Atlanta were near Maryland

Once the rest of the expansion occurs DC would make sense as an option.

they had it in dc when CP3 was suspended for the nut punch. pretty sure attendance was terrible, also md lost in the first round.

The economy may have something to do with those figures. IIRC, 09 was FSU vs Duke and 11 was UNC vs Duke. The seating arrangement for Gboro vs the Dome in basketball setup is only 3,000 (the Dome is a little larger). I'm not about to say FSU fans mading the trip to Atlanta is the reason for a higher attendance figure than Duke/UNC in N.C.

Yeah, DC was a terrible venue for the tournament. The weather can be hit or miss. If good weather, at least it's a nice city to visit...but I like the feel of the tournament in places like Greensboro or Charlotte where you are constantly running into other attendees, fans, etc as opposed to Atlanta or DC where it's just one of 5 other large events going on somewhere around the city in addition to the normal tourism.

I think it was too, I'm not looking it up though. I think it would fare better after expansion however.

Funny story about DC: MD planned a pep rally on Thursday night at like 7. However we lost in the noon game to Clemson so by the time the pep rally occured we were already knocked out. My friends got absolutely drunk at the bar then went to laugh and it was basically them, like four big donors and the Yows in this giant ass room.

Horrible thread from a Terp.
