Good bourbon

Ahh yes, the old "you don't drink your Bourbon the right way" argument rears it's head again. The best way to drink bourbon is the way you like it. For most of the bourbons I drink, I like one cube to cool it down and add a little water. I've got stones, but don't find them to alter the temp much, and I end up adding a drop or two of water anyway.

Of course, real men go with the "RJtini" as discussed earlier in the thread.

People can drink however they want, of course. At temps below 55 degrees (I'm guessing but somewhere around that) you can't tell the Beam from the Booker's though.

Bullshit. You can tell the difference in a Manhattan or Old Fashioned, much less when you're just comparing the bourbons unmixed. If you can't, it sounds like a personal issue.

Just got back from a meeting at a hunting lodge in Mississippi. They only had single barrel Jack and Glenfiddich 18 (obv not bourbon). It was glorious.

Huh? What does that have to do with temperature muting the flavor? Get someone to blind taste test you, you don't even have to confess when you fail.

The greatest wine tasters in the world have been fooled into thinking a red was a white because it was chilled, and vice versa.

Too cold certainly mutes the flavor, but that's not what you said:

well I said I was guessing what temp. What temp would you counter with? I used 55 because it sticks out to me as a wine guy, but I can see that being two warm to much matter with bourbon

It's an up and down ride, in my opinion. The ice tightens the bourbon up before melting down a little and relaxing the flavors. The first few sips can be a little muted, but I wouldn't go as far as saying there's no difference between Beam and Booker's at that point. Additionally, if bourbon gets too warm, the alcohol can really take over which mutes the flavor in it's own way.

I am not a fan of Eagle Rare, which I know is odd. It's fine, but doesn't really seem like whiskey.

Also, my go-to in the next price class down from the ones we've been discussing is Wild Turkey Rare Breed when it's on sale for 30

Thread should begin and end with Pappy Van Winkle imo

Except you can't find it. I can't get it in NC. I contacted liquor stores in Virginia and Kentucky. Both said you have to sign up and then hope they get enough around Christmas time.

The Van Winkles traditionally release twice a year and the spring allotment went out a while back so it's most likely sold out. You'll have to wait until the fall bottling goes out (probably November) in order to have a shot at getting a bottle.

I bought a bottle of 12 last Friday. I had to ask for it. They are keeping all of the Van Winkle behind the counter.

Well you can always buy on Ebay (or similar sites) if you don't mind paying a little markup.

I have a nice little mini-collection. 2 10's, 2 12's, and 1 15, 20, and a 23 [/brag]

Tips:
-Look-up every liquor store in your area and get on the phone. I spent a whole weekend calling like every place in San Diego. I got a few hits and obviously drove there and bought them. I found a place in Vegas that had like 20+ bottles of the 12 which was sweet.
-Could be an issue of sample size, but I had the most luck with liquor stores in college areas, where I assume students aren't buying expensive bottles
-Ask to be put on a waitlist for it (can't hurt to ask)
-"Like" Rip Van Winkle Distillery on Facebook, they post when shipments go out to each state.
