#2 UVA @ Wake, 7:00 PM | Game Thread | GO DEACS!!

Tony Bennett got off to a rough start at UVa. His first team lost 9 out of their final 10 ACC games. During his second season he got beat by 43 points by the Washington Huskies. Their style is to body check opponents as they enter the paint. It really seemed to rattle our players.

The freshman wall has been hit.

Also, frankly, they've been exposed as players who should be coming off the bench on a decent ACC team.
It's okay to be a "specialty player" (a nice term for one-dimensional) as a second-stringer. Not so much when you're counted on for starter minutes.

Exactly. Devin and CMM just don't have the talent and consistency that would make our freshmen dangerous in a supporting role.

We desperately need any incoming freshmen to step onto the court as one of the best players. Unfortunately, it looks like only one player seriously considering Wake clearly looks to fit that bill.

There are idiots who think Jeff [Redacted] isn't the worst bench coach we've ever had?

It's easy to panic after last night's performance. There's no excuse for how badly Wake played. UVA has been making teams look that bad all year - it's not as though Anderson and Perrantes are completely irreplaceable types of players. I think we've been in more games this year than we should have been because of the three point shot. When Dinos or Mitch or Crab or some combination of the three are hitting three point shots, we look like a decent basketball team. When they aren't, and teams can focus on Codi and Devin, we look awful again. But much like it'd be dumb to take one of our good performances this year and say that we're a really good team, it's crazy how much this loss means to some of you. Seems likely we'll win 15 or 16 games this year, about what most people predicted pre-season. The freshmen have looked pretty good this year, especially considering they were recruited coming off the dumpster fire of the previous regime. Next year's recruiting class is rated even higher. The following year has some exciting prospects, and a big class is available even if we whiff on the 5 stars. Obviously, there are some serious trouble spots - Manning's bench coaching needs work, and this is the first time we've really folded this year after going down big. To me, this, the UNC game, and the Arkansas game are the only games this season where we looked like we didn't belong out there. There have been some other tough losses, and some losses we should have won, but we've been competitive in most games this year. Nobody cares about moral victories, but it's better than complete futility and "no way out" like it looked almost every night during the bz years. I think Manning is showing guys like Devin that he doesn't care how important they are to the team on a given night, if they won't buy in to his style, his plan, his way of playing, they won't play. He's totally willing to sacrifice a few wins this season to drive home that point if need be. If y'all really look at a guy like Danny Manning and think he thinks losing is ok, you're nuts.

good post

Thanks, for the info on Brogdon. IMO, he is the type of player you build a program upon. Not a one-and-done guy, but talented, smart and a team player. He plays under control yet is fearless. Excellent fundamentals.

I fear WAKE is looking to much for an immediate fix that will be only temporary, we need this kind of player.

C'mon, mebane. Manning is looking for every kind of talented player.

I'm thinking more of the fans. Hopefully DM has clear picture of what he wants and how to develop a balanced, deep team. Can't afford many misses in BB recruiting.

Yeah, I wonder if mebane changes his mind if Brogdon changes his mind and goes pro, especially considering he'll prolly already have his degree because of his medical redshirt.

There are a handful of kids who you can predict will go pro after a year - kids like Okafor and some of the UK kids. But after that you never know who is going to blow up and who is going to mature slower. You just try to recruit the most talented kids you can.

Emmett only averaged 7.7 PPG before Knight got there and developed him into the player he became. And it's not like the two transfers were all-world guys that every school in the country was drooling over. Kasib was solid at 15.1 PPG, but Storo only added 6.3 PPG. These were two last-minute "fillers" mostly. Top Juco's don't go to Lubbock in West Texas. That's why they were still around at the last minute when Knight had to put the pieces together for a team that only had four total returning roster players. The point is that while there may have been no frosh starters, three of his five starters had never played a minute for TT before he got there...and the other two only averaged a total of 22.2 PPG between them the previous year. And Knight took that hodge-podge group and won 23 games in one of the power conferences and made the NCAA Tournament.
who gives a fuck?

Yeah, sorry, not buying the "looked flat out of the chute, lack of energy and effort, long layoff" excuses. UVA was up only 8-7 like 7 minutes into the game. They did a better job switching on Dinos on the perimeter and contested Crab's shots better (the 2 best players in the half-court last game). They're just a damn good, well-coached team that is extremely good at taking away teams' strengths and exposing teams' deficiencies. Have been doing it all year. Not gonna overthink it anymore than that.

All evidence suggests he does. With limited time, he brought in 3 freshmen who look like they'll be reliable bench players. The 2015 class has at least one player who could start right away, another who will definitely be in the rotation, and another who will contribute and has a high ceiling. The 2016 already has a steady PG and good shooter. What Manning is missing is the star athletes to go along with the pieces he already has.
