2020 Carolina Panthers Thread

We could be in a tiebreaker with the Chargers for the third QB picked after the Bengals and Dolphins.

I don’t think we draft a QB

Why not? No guarantee Cam comes back healthy. Less guarantee he stays healthy. Allen is a questionable backup although he deserves a chance to compete for a roster spot. QB is our biggest need.

Otherwise we are looking at the FA pool. Tannehill and Bridgewater are our best bets there.

Grier was no worse than Allen yesterday and it was his first start. He also didn’t have DJ Moore and the OT play was maybe the worst it’s been this year. Didn’t help that the defense and special teams were bad too.

I think Cam will be back and we won’t draft a quarterback in the first round, especially not a stoner. I doubt we draft a quarterback at all.

KEEP McCaffrey. Keep Luke and DJ Moore. Hire Mike McCarthy or Lincoln Riley (he does love North Carolina). Everyone else is expendable. First and second round picks this year need to be offensive linemen. We will suck so bad next year, but get a ton of draft capital through trades. Draft Trevor Lawrence 1st overall in 2021 and already have a young OLine budging in front of him.

This sounds crazy, but I don’t want a QB in this draft. Outside of Burrow, I’m skeptical. And no QB, especially a rookie, will survive with this OLine. Then in 2021, you’ve got Lawrence, McCaffrey and DJ Moore as your three headed monster on offense with a couple of good lineman in front of them

We're entered into multi year rebuilt territory, IMO. Too many holes to fill in this draft/FA to compete next year. Both lines need to be completely rebuilt, we need a starting CB, and two safeties. That's not even addressing that we probably need a QB, a TE, and a #2/3 WR.

This team is in trouble, as if that wasn't already obvious.

Yeah no reason to take a QB in this draft. Saving the $19 mil via Cam does nothing, who the hell are they going to spend it on to actually improve the team? Much better to use next year to see what, if anything, Cam has left for that money. If he returns to form then obviously it is a much shorter bounce back and worth much more than that $19 mil; if he is truly done then there is nothing really lost as there are plenty of other holes to fill before getting a QB.

To me the bigger question is Luke. Unless it is a full 180 by Cam, which is doubtful, no way will Luke still be around by the time they are any good. I'm sure he still has a ton of value to a team on the edge, I think you could probably still get 2 first round picks for him now.

Coulda had a safety in the 3rd round last year. Nobody is arguing with my takes on last year’s draft now. It was 3-4 D players, unnecessary backups, and maybe Little and Daley can salvage it.

I think the big problem with the defense is the last ditch 3-4. That’s one reason why Rivera should have been gone last year before he could screw things up more. KK will be back. Butler will be gone. McCoy could come back. The big question is if Burns can be a 4-3 DE. Definitely draft on both lines and secondary but the QB need is more urgent unless we can’t get one of the top QBs and want to gamble on Cam and taking Lawrence if he doesn’t get healthy.

Allen and Heinecke were solid when given the same opportunity Grier had yesterday.

We took a safety in the third round in 2018 and signed a free agent safety last season. I can understand not drafting another safety in the third round in 2019.

Also, any third round pick is useless with Hurney at the helm. You basically limit yourself to one draft pick per year while he is there.

Panthers can’t rely on Cam. Need a decent plan B via draft or free agency. Amazing how quickly this team hit the skids. Lots of pieces now needed

This team is not as bad talent-wise as they appear. They are just poorly coached. The "Steeler way" is to hire a young coach and give him a long leash. Go back to 4-3 defense. Trade the 3-4 pieces that don't fit. Supposedly that is Burns, who too light and weak to be an every down 4-3 DE. Not a good run defender. We paid too much for a specialist in drafting him, and regressed defensively. We actually learned how to use CMC this year. Remember how we thought the OL was the issue in previous years? New OC needs to retain this part of the playbook. We have not won games in November/December for two years now. New coach needs to change the mentality that causes this.

Keep Cam in his "show me" year. If he flames out, get a game manager in FA or see if someone on staff develops - agree they look pretty bad this year. The 49ers have theirs in Garappolo. The only way I'd draft a QB is if there is someone who has the "it" factor who is overlooked (Russell Wilson). We can't afford a Daniel Jones, Mitch Trubisky type pick.

We've struck out drafting CB's in previous years (or developing them), and refused to upgrade at safety (did not draft Landry Collins, did not pursue him as FA). We need to be strong in the middle of the field and safety is a weakness.

Assess the WR's to see if they are getting open. What kind of window are they giving the QB? Acquire good route runners who get open, and shed those who don't. I get the feeling we have a lot of Tavon Austin types on our team - guys who are fast, but can't run a sharp route or stop/accelerate well.

Fully clean house and fire Hurney, too. We need some good, deep drafts and FA that fit our scheme.

DJ Moore has Pro Bowl numbers, so I think he's getting open enough. I'd like to have at least one bigger WR on the roster though. My guess is that Ian Thomas is not good and we should bring back Ed Dickson at any cost. Offensive line obviously needs help and I don't know how the team values Greg Little at this point. Decision will have to be made at QB sometime in the next 14 months.

Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia probably won't be available when we draft. Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa might be available. Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama.

CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma might be available. Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama might be available. Henry Ruggs WR Alabama will be available.

DL we could look at are Derrick Brown (Auburn), Javon Kinlaw (South Carolina)

Justin Herbert QB, Oregon will be available if we fall in love with him. Tua might be available.

A lot depends on the new coach. The new offense could use 3WR so we could be fine with Manhertz as a blocking TE.

Pretty much all this. It’s a gut rehab and drafting a QB for this dumpster fire would be terrible. Shore up the trenches. Be selective on tier 2 FAs. Shoot for 2021 season before McCaffrey and G-reg (if he even comes back) mileage runs out.
