Just to bother Ph.
Panthers decline 5th year option on Vernon Butler.
In case you've forgotten, Vernon Butler was our 2016 first round pick at DT. This will be his last season under his rookie deal. Hard to believe he's been here for 3 seasons.
Obviously, Butler could still wind up being cut if he doesn't have a good camp and we find a lower cost alternative. But, at least he's a veteran and knows the system.
Why throw two seasons tanking for a prospect who might wind up not being as good as you'd hoped ?
Tua is not as good as Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, John Elway, or even Cam Newton.
Yeah, I don't get the school of thought you tank for Tua.
Same - word on Tua is that he is a pre-snap read guy. If that first read doesn't workout, he doesn't have the ability to get to the next read - he just runs the ball. That is fine when you are the Alabama QB, playing with the most talented team almost every game, but that won't be the case in the NFL.
Clemson sunshine started the year like that, but towards the end of the season, he started working through progressions.
If Tua was 6'5, 255 lbs and ran a 4.5 40, I might agree with you - but since he isn't.
Tua is a really good college QB, but IMO he is not a once-in-a-generation, tank-for-Tua type player.
If you want to argue that it's easier to find a QB in the 3rd than with one of the top picks, go for it.
I would not have drafted a backup QB with other glaring needs either. That’s the point.
