2023 College Football Coaching Carousel

Rumors going around that WV will fire Neal Brown (no surprise) after the season and are back-channeling with Rich Rod (currently coaching 6-2 Jacksonville State in their first FBS level season) to bring him back to Morgantown.

Rita Rodriguez just belongs in Morgantown, WV:

Seemed like Neal Brown was going to turn things around, then that Houston Hail Mary happened and shit started rolling downhill again.

Here's a pretty good summary of current coaches on the hot seat, their buyouts  and their potential replacements:

Including:

Brent Pry – Virginia Tech

Justin Fuente left behind a broken program. And while Brent Pry deserves time to pick up the pieces, there’s been no signs of progress.

The Hokies aren’t recruiting well — barring late commits, they likely won’t sign a top-40 class for the third straight year — and could finish with three or four wins this year.

Brent Pry Buyout: Pry’s six-year deal includes a buyout equal to 70% of the remaining contract. That would be roughly $13.7 million if fired after this season, which would be just two years after Virginia Tech paid nearly $9 million to Fuente.

Brent Pry Replacement: Dave Clawson was reportedly a finalist — along with Billy Napier — before they hired Pry two years ago. He could be a finalist again.

Jamey Chadwell and Charles Huff could also be candidates.

I'm sure Clawson would never leave for VA Tech. He might be tempted by a job like Michigan (NOT MSU!) but I don't see Michigan going after someone with Clawson's background. He might be great for the job but Michigan would want "A Michigan Man" or someone who would be more of a good PR choice. Elko is a possibility for Michigan because he has already shown that he is willing to go to the highest bidder. He's a hot commodity at the moment.

So Clawson to VT "again"...and Jimbo with a $77 million dollar buyout...wow.
Jimbo's contract is everything that is wrong with college athletics IMO. Texas A&M can likely "afford" to pull the trigger in part because of the sec tv money advantages over most programs. It's still recklessly irresponsible management. Teams like fsu bitch and moan that they can't be as fiscally insane as tamu.

CBS Sports publishes its own pre-season and in-season hot seat ranking for college football coaches. This is the first week of its in-season ranking, which is more of a rating than a strict ranking. The 2023 pre-season ratings for all FBS coaches are here. If the 2023 rating is different from 2022, then the 2022 rating is shown in ( ).

Of, course, this is just a snapshot of things this week. Things can change fast in college football. As Lou Hotlz said:

“A lifetime contract for a coach means if you’re ahead in the third quarter and moving the ball, they can’t fire you.”

This is the ratings system:
  • 5 -- Win or be fired
  • 4 -- Start improving now
  • 3 -- Pressure is mounting
  • 2 -- All good ... for now
  • 1 -- Safe and secure
  • 0 -- Untouchable
Here is the mid-season update for those coaches whose rating has changed:

Based on this season so far, Dabo went from a "0" to a "2". Harbaugh went from a "0" to a "3". Coach Clawson's rating of "1" hasn't changed.

Jimbo Fisher looks like a strong candidate for MSU

Urban Meyer looks like a strong candidate for Texas A&M

Hey Zach, you lost 51-10 on Saturday and the other team fired their coach, so you've got to go too.
