Alex Kinal - Punter

Will the Deacs have 2 Kickers and 2 Punters on Scholly this fall? I know Newman and Wulfeck are, Plus Kinal and Chad Hedlund?

I like the competition. And also bringing a guy in before the incumbent is a senior or graduated. Lets them develop in practice with less pressure. Seems different from what they have done in the past.

Did Wulfeck get on scholly now he came in as a walk on?

Still remember seeing a certain poster on this thread boom one 82 yards against NC State. Talk about a game changer...

SD...great stuff. Man, you're missed.

Just curious: why don't most US punters employ the rugby-style punt if it's ultimately an advantage to the kicking team? Seems like most punters would want to learn that style...anything to gain an advantage.

Because some can't do it. Or some are just more confident in what they all ready do (Nose up so ball doesn't turn over, angle toward sideline Like Jeff Feagles, Coffin corner, etc. ) Some it comes really easy. I started it halfway through my Rookie year. Because I had like 10 TBs in 8 games. Had to change something up. First game I tried it I had 4 I 20s in 5 punts. So obviously I stuck with it.

But Since Darren Bennett started it back with the Chargers, I would say more than half do it now. Its becoming more of the norm. And Coffin Corner punts are all but non-existent in the NFL due to the low trajectory and risk of blocked punts.

That's interesting. I hadn't really thought of it like that, but it seems like in the NFL punting from midfield, they're content to just pop the ball up to the 10-15 and let coverage insure a fair catch.

Yeah, pretty much. My target line was 8 yard line. Returners are generally told heels at the 10 and anything over your head let it go. If I get the returner to let the ball go at the 8, most of the time But anything inside the 15 is a plus.

That's one way you can easily see the difference between NFL and college specialists. That situation in college is going to be a touchback unless the punter is really good.

That's one reason why it's frustrating to see Grobe punt on 4th and short from around the 35-40 nowadays because the odds of getting it inside the 10 are slim and the defense isn't good enough to be certain the opposing offense isn't going to make it to the 35-40 anyway. Most likely the next time the offense touches that ball it will be at the 20 or at least inside our 35-40.

Yeah which is crazy. I had better coverage in College, Some of it due to guys like Ghee, Gattis, Vaughn, Swanson, Curry, Abbate, Phonz covering for me. But also because our scheme and college rules allow players to be 5 yards down the field when the ball is kicked. IN NFL, only 2 guys can be down the field when ball is kicked. FWIW our coverage has been amazing. Just need better punting.

If some competition in the area of special teams means that we can boot it into the endzone consistently and punt it more than 30 yards then I am all for having multiple ones on scholarship

To the guys who are students, you guys should try to hang with Kinal. His overflow of girls should leave some quality talent for his buddies.

American chicks love Aussies. if you're his pal, you'll do OK.

I was sitting next to a State fan, fat guy with the overalls on and everything, and he said something like, "That punter is a hell of a weapon but you can't keep relying on him." Two seconds later BOOM.

a football player with an Australian accent is going to slay so much tail at Wake

and he's not bad looking either.
