A spectre is haunting America - the spectre of middle-aged white people doing heroin, abusing alcohol, and/or killing themselves.

Alone among age and ethnic groups in the US, and alone among counterparts in advanced countries, the all-cause mortality rate for white Americans aged 45-54 increased in the period from 1999-2013, driven by alcohol and drug poisoning, suicides, and chronic liver conditions.

I think we need a protected class for these poor people.
 
The mortality increase is concentrated in folks with HS diploma or less. This is just a shocking finding. One of the authors is this year's Econ Nobel laureate.
 
Most likely a normal reaction to an overabundance of white guilt. You just can't bottle that stuff up for but so long.

Most likely it is because middle aged white people are now having to carry this economy. They are being worked to death to support this Obama economy.
 
did the economy ever really truly recover since the housing and bank crisis? this sort of problem usually is rooted at least partially in economic woes. I know that, according to at least one study, today's unemployed and discouraged have only a 10% chance of getting steady employment again in their lives.
 
Yes. The economy recovered but not for many people.
 
That's a yes. Our economy is broken in that the people at the top have found too many ways to make money without involving everyone else. Any economic gains are going to be hoarded at the top by design.
