Interestingly, per Sports Reference's SRS, which takes into consideration point differential and SOS (take it with a grain of salt based on the limitations), Clawson has three of the best five teams in school history:

1. 1946
2. 2017
3. 2021
4. 1924
5. 2022

Orange Bowl year is 11th. This year ranks 65th.

Dooley was before FSU joined, correct?
FSU joined before Dooley's sixth and final season, in which he went 4-4, 8-4 and won the Poulan Weedeater Independence Bowl (WF's second bowl win ever) to finish the year ranked 25th

Wow Caldwell's record...- 8 years, never .500 in the ACC.

Wow Caldwell's record...- 8 years, never .500 in the ACC

Damn, that’s an impressive multi-generational standard we’ve set there, I’d say, even without Coach Caldwell’s contribution.

Last year, we won that game against another SEC school in the 7th straight bowl!

So twice in the 70s, 80s, and 00s, once in the 10s, and none in the 90s.

Can you break that out by odd and even numbered years ?

Peahead Walker, Jim Grobe and Dave Clawson are the only three coaches in the discussion as the best football coach in Wake Forest history. Walker and Grobe spent 13 years at the helm of the football program and are tied for the most wins with 77. Clawson has coached ten years. For the sake of comparision, these are their overall and conference records for their first ten years.

Peahead Walker 55-36-4 36-23-4 6 winning seasons overall and 6 winning seasons in conference play
Jim Grobe 62-60 32-48 4 winning seasons overall and 2 winning seasons in conference play
Dave Clawson 63-61 30-49 6 winning seasons overall and 1 winning season in conference play.

Jim Grobe won an ACC championship in 2006 and finished second in the Atlantic division twice. Dave Clawson won an Atlantic division championship. Peahead Walker finished second in the 16 member Southern conference twice and finished third twice. Seven Southern conference opponents have been members of the ACC. As far as I am concerned, Peahead Walker remains the most successful football coach in Wake Forest history.

The stat one needs to look at is how many opponent homecomings we have payed in over the years. Winning is one thing. Playing with no chance to win is another. THE DIFFERENCE IN CLAWSON IS we were damn competitive in many games we lost. And that is all I have ever asked for. Games over in the first quarter suck. Y’all get your shit together. You drive to a game when you have a chance.

Don't think people understand where WF football was for most of the 1960s through the beginning of the 00s. UVA beat WF in football every year (and the two teams played every season) from 1984 to until 2001. After WF won in 2001, UVA won the next three. So, during that span WF went 1-20 against.... UVA.

Yeah I remember that first game against FSU as an ACC member, I think we lost 35-7 and yet I was still somewhat pleased that we looked halfway competitive.

In fairness UVA’s hay days started in the mid late 80’s, but still pretty bad.
