Just because most of us were never really at risk for serious Covid effects doesn't mean we shouldn't blow the Great Wall all the way to the Texas-Mexican border because of the people who were.

Any source of the virus is a possibility. There has been no scientifically proven and accepted finding of the source. The fact is that the virus spread from Wuhan, the home to China's Virology Laboratory. Mere coincidence? Definitely worth digging into.

The Chinese Government will prevent a full and independent investigation of the source of the virus. So, we will never know.

FWIW, have no idea why any anti-Trump forces feel the need to exclude the possibility that COVID 19 was created and escaped from a Chinese lab (other than anything that comes from Trump must be wrong). The previous administration's bungled response and prolonged failure to develop a coherent national strategy to deal with Covid 19 killed Americans and destroyed businesses. Whether the virus was manmade by the Chinese Government or from a natural source, has no bearing on the failures of the Trump administration. Those trying too hard to exclude consideration of all possible sources just give more cover for the whacked-out conspiracy theorists.

its more about a reactionary push back against the covid denying, anti-mask, anti-science assholes that kept fighting against attempts trying to combat covid with their "but mah freedumbs" crowd now now trying some fake gotcha moment in an attempt to say, "see i told you! I feel validated."

If China created a virus and purposefully unleashed it to the world, that would be an act of war. So yes, it makes sense to “exclude consideration” of that until we have evidence.

The people who would discount something simply because Trump said it are every bit as stupid as the ones who would believe it for the same reason.

Well that is a very myopic and Republican view. In your words, if we don't believe anything that Trump would vomit then clearly we believe China's narrative? Just like voter fraud, there is no evidence and all legal channels they perused were laughed out of court because it was all make-believe.

sorry, critical thinking involves facts and not opinions. we don't have any information to show that it came from the lab and there is little to no chance China will give us that information. as mentioned before, it is worth looking into but because Trump had a knee-jerk reaction and said it came from the lab doesn't mean it did. just like ingesting bleach or that magical medication that he was pushing. Trump has in no way, not in any circumstance, provided the burden of proof on anything he has said.

 
Are there actually a lot of “non-Trump forces” [chortle] excluding this idea from consideration? Isn’t the Biden administration specifically looking into it now?

Those results showed that the current virus is very, very closely related to the earlier SARS and MER viruses. Both of those are considered to be bat viruses that evolved naturally.

The current virus is only evolutionarily different from bat viruses. Much like the identified variants differ from one another.

As good as scientists are, it is still difficult, probably impossible, to make changes as small as one amino acid in a specific protein. Artificial changes are usually much larger.

If it escaped from the lab it doesn’t mean it was engineered in the lab.
