Deacs Soccer 2013-2014.

Anyone else watching the UVA-UMD replay from last night? ALL OUT.

@TopDrawerSoccerRT @WakeWSoccer: Katie Stengel will be out indefinitely due to blood clots in her leg go.wfu.edu/27j

Scary as hell. Get well soon, Katie

What terrible news about Stengel. No idea how long it can take to come back from that. Good thing they caught it I think that can be pretty dangerous?

They play #1 undefeated Virginia today so huge game and going to be really tough without Stengel. It's senior day as well so get out there and support the girls.

Wow, that's awful. I don't know the details of her situation, but depending on the cause, a person with a deep venous thrombosis typically needs to be on anticoagulant medications for 6 months to life long. You can't play soccer on anticoagulant meds.

I'd be surprised if Katie plays again this season. As Rafi said, she'll now be on anticoagulants, which would prohibit any activity that could lead to injury. This one hurts, but life is bigger than any game. Get well soon, Katie, and get it done for #12 ladies.

I should add that depending on the cause and aggressiveness of treatment, it is possible for people to get off anticoagulants sooner than 6 months. The press release indicates she may be able to come back this year. Obviously her overall health will outweigh any other considerations.

If this is a first time isolated event - no family history, normal coagulation studies, and especially if a good cause can be determined (eg. long plane flight) - she might not be committed to extended anticoagulant therapy. It is true that she cannot play soccer while on anticoagulants.
Hate it for her and the team. Wish her a quick recovery and hope it does not significantly affect her potential professional ambitions.

Wake Forest's Katie Stengel after game said she will be on blood thinners for 3 months. Can't play soccer while on them.

This is unbelievably sad for Katie...and for WF.

Hopefully she recovers completely and speedily.

Ended up knotted after 2OTs. Not a bad result, but we need to pull out a few of these close ones.

CU had a quick restart on a Deacons foul and looked to be offisides on the play. Deacs were not too happy about it.

Decent crowd though and a perfect night weather-wise.

Deacs dominate Davidson 4-0 tonight. Wake outshot them around 25-3. Gimenez alone more than doubled davidson's shots.

I've seen some records against their recent competition that help put in perspective how good wake has been in soccer in the past several years. They are undefeated against Davidson in their past 16 games (and Davidson has had some good teams). They are 22-1-2 in their last 25 games against NC State. They are 5-1-1 in their last 7 against Maryland, and Maryland was ranked top 5 in the country in 6 of those games.

Wake is in first in the ACC this year despite having lost super freshman Collin Martin to DC United this summer. They're really having a good year.

How was the crowd? Soccer team has been buying kegs for students on the hill. Coupled with a great team, a nice incentive to come.

Hopefully the Deacs take care of Duke later this week and enter the game against Notre Dame tied for first in the conference. Notre Dame is unbeaten and number 2 in the country, the Deacs are up to 8th in the nation.

So, after basketball and field hockey, will men's soccer be the next team to undergo a Wellman "culture change"?
