General Election Thread: Two Weeks Out

Don't know where to put this exactly, this thread is as good as any. Good read on the attitudes behind GOP Latino-bashing and the likely results thereof (spoiler: not much good news for the GOP). http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/07/the-white-strategy/485612/

Pete Wilson's Prop 187 fuck up is well known. The more ominous part of the article is that a smaller, Whiter, regional GOP could fester for multiple cycles and make a bad situation significantly worse for the GOP. Trump helps turn NM blue. NV and CO will be next. Trump may turn AZ purple earlier than expected.

Trump's not a data driven quant jock, but McCain & Cruz have no excuse for not knowing the trends. Flake and Heller have no problem publicly dissing Trump. NM & NV GOP Governors are Latino and didn't even attend private Trump fundraisers. Can understand why AZ Governor wouldn't appear in public with Trump. TX seems early, but even GA & NC Governors refused to appear with Trump in public. Trump & the GOP base are screwing the party for the future.

Timing's the question for the Castro Brothers. Way smarter than Rubio, but they need to move statewide in TX at the right time. Still don't think HRC needs a Latino VP, but she should go with Perez over Castro now. Castros are the future, but shouldn't skip skip steps nationally until they can win statewide in TX. Dem Latino bench is promising now, but doesn't have to be ready before 2020 or 2024. Trump accelerates that timetable unfavorably for the GOP.

I still expect nothing to happen to her- at most a slap on the wrist.
FBI 'REVOLT OF WATERGATE PROPORTIONS' IF HILLARY SKATES
A former U.S. attorney says there is no doubt that, before the November election, the FBI will recommend to Attorney General Loretta Lynch that she prosecute Hillary Clinton for mishandling of classified information, warning that intervention by the White House would provoke a revolt of Watergate proportions.

In an interview with WND, Joseph diGenova said that based “on all the available evidence, including what is publicly known and what is known in the law enforcement community, there is sufficient, credible evidence needed to meet the predicate to begin a grand jury – sufficient evidence for probable cause to believe various crimes have been committed.”

“There is simply no doubt that the FBI is going to recommend a series of charges to Attorney General Lynch,” he insisted.

DiGenova said he has been speaking with former FBI, Secret Service and intelligence people about the case.
“Based on the information they have secured from their brothers and sisters in the law enforcement community, there is unanimity on the fact that charges are going to be recommended by the FBI,” he said.

“It is impossible for them not to, under the circumstances,” he stressed.

DiGenova acknowledged, however, that Lynch has the discretion to do nothing.

But to the people in the FBI and intelligence community, he said, that would be “inconceivable.”

“There is going to be a revolt of Watergate proportions if criminal charges do not go forward.”

Hillary Clinton’s $21,667,000 “Speaking Fees” Fortune, Broken Down Speech by Speech
The New York Post has compiled a bullet point list of Hillary Clinton’s paid speeches between 2013-2015.

These amounts reflect the mandatory financial disclosures released this month. In two years (from April 2013 to March 2015) Hillary Clinton amassed $21,667,000 in “speaking fees” and another $5,000,000 as an advance for her 2014 book, “Hard Choices.”

The bullet list below is a doozy…and speaks volumes as to how Trump will deal with Hillary’s obligation to “pay back” the big business fees she collected if elected US President.

No wonder he is branding the former first lady and Secretary of State as “crooked Hillary.”

And an aside…if you think Hillary’s $21,667,000 was a lot of income for the Clinton clan, you can also tack on an additional $26,630,000 for her ex-president hubby Bill Clinton, and his “speaking fees” collected during the same time period.

General Election Thread: Clinton vs. Trump

OMG. Look at all those special interests she will be absolutely beholden to!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait for her to deregulate the camping industry.

But if Castro stays on with Hillary for two terms, he will bet set-up better than if he waited and ran statewide in TX in four years.

Feinstein would have been a better pick than Ferraro as VP in '84, but she was only SF Mayor at the time. Ironically SF and Alaska both have about the same population and Palin (for multiple reasons) wasn't ready in 2008 either. Perez and Ken Salazar don't have the upside of either Castro, but both are more accomplished than either Castro now.

Trump's screwed the GOP so badly that HRC wins swing state SW even without a Latino VP. Kaine's the safest pick, but Warren would do more for the party overall now than a Latino VP. The same party hasn't won more than three consecutive elections since FDR/Truman, so no guarantee for Castro as VP to POTUS uninterrupted.

May not be ideal for the Castros, but turning TX purple first via their statewide wins (Senator or Governor) would be better for the party for the long haul. CA Dems should push Bercerra (higher upside) over Sanchez for Feinstein's seat in 2018.

Timing matters. Lincoln couldn't have won as an abolitionist in 1860. Bubba fucked up with DADT & DOMA. Obama/Biden endorsed marriage equality at about the right time. Castros are way more talented than Little Marco & Cruz, but they still need more time. Demographics and the party are moving in their direction. Not so much for Rubio, Cruz, and Ryan in the GOP.

'Pubs miscalculated on LGBT issues multiple times and Trump's blown them up on immigration reform. Reince is no genius, but it doesn't matter what the establishment thinks if the base is way too hostile to change. DeMint wanted a purist party and he'll get his wish soon enough.

Security features were disabled for the entire State Department to accomodate Hillary's server.

WASHINGTON (AP) — State Department staffers wrestled for weeks in December 2010 over a serious technical problem that affected emails from then-Secretary Hillary Clinton's home email server, causing them to temporarily disable security features on the government's own systems, according to emails released Wednesday.

The emails were released under court order Wednesday to the conservative legal advocacy group Judicial Watch, which has sued the State Department over access to public records related to the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee's service as the nation's top diplomat between 2009 and 2013.

The emails, reviewed by The Associated Press, show that State Department technical staff disabled software on their systems intended to block phishing emails that could deliver dangerous viruses. They were trying urgently to resolve delivery problems with emails sent from Clinton's private server.

"This should trump all other activities," a senior technical official, Ken LaVolpe, told IT employees in a Dec. 17, 2010, email. Another senior State Department official, Thomas W. Lawrence, wrote days later in an email that deputy chief of staff Huma Abedin personally was asking for an update about the repairs. Abedin and Clinton, who both used Clinton's private server, had complained that emails each sent to State Department employees were not being reliably received.

After technical staffers turned off some security features, Lawrence cautioned in an email, "We view this as a Band-Aid and fear it's not 100 percent fully effective."

The AP initially reported Wednesday that the emails described security features being turned off on Clinton's own private server, but State Department spokesman John Kirby clarified hours later that the emails described "a series of troubleshooting measures to the department's system — not Secretary Clinton's system — to attempt to remedy the problem."

The emails were released under court order Wednesday to the conservative legal advocacy group Judicial Watch, which has sued the State Department over access to public records related to the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee's service as the nation's top diplomat between 2009 and 2013.

Clinton has repeatedly denied there is any evidence her private email server ever was breached. Her campaign did not immediately provide comment Wednesday.

Days after the technical crisis, on Jan. 9, 2011, an IT worker was forced to shut down Clinton's server because he believed "someone was trying to hack us." Later that day, he wrote, "We were attacked again so I shut (the server) down for a few min." It was one of several occasions when email access to Clinton's BlackBerry smartphone was disrupted because her private server was down, according to the documents.

The AP reported last year that in the early morning hours of Aug. 3, 2011, Clinton received infected emails, disguised as speeding tickets from New York. The emails instructed recipients to print the attached tickets. Opening an attachment would have allowed hackers to take over control of a victim's computer.

In a blistering audit released last month, the State Department's inspector general concluded that Clinton and her team ignored clear internal guidance that her email setup broke federal standards and could leave sensitive material vulnerable to hackers. Her aides twice brushed aside concerns, in one case telling technical staff "the matter was not to be discussed further," the report said.

The State Department has released more than 52,000 pages of Clinton's work-related emails, including some that have since been classified. Clinton has withheld thousands of additional emails, saying they were personal. The emails released Wednesday were not made available until after the inspector general's office published its report, and Judicial Watch asked a federal judge to force the State Department to turn them over.

The case is one of about three dozen lawsuits over access to records related to Clinton's time as secretary, including one filed by the AP. As part of its ongoing suit, lawyers from Judicial Watch on Wednesday questioned Bryan Pagliano, a former IT staffer for Clinton who helped set up the server, under oath. According to the group, Pagliano repeatedly responded to questions by invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, as he did last year before a congressional committee.

The FBI is also investigating whether Clinton's use of the private email server imperiled government secrets. It has recently interviewed Clinton's top aides, including former chief of staff Cheryl Mills and Abedin.
