How Long Will the Shutdown Last?

How Long Will the Current Government Shutdown Last?

No idea. Nor do I feel confident what will be the outcome. I guess I hope that the Pubs/Dems end up finding some compromise that is of minimal consequence but can help the Pubs save a little face nonetheless. 'Cause otherwise I don't see a way out.

Just curious how long people think the current shutdown will last. I think it goes up to the debt ceiling showdown in a couple of weeks and no matter who you agree with, America loses

For my D.C. friends and family, I hope it's very short.

i think they're going to run it out to the debt ceiling deadline and then cut some kind of deal, but I have no idea what that might look like.

I have no idea. I don't really know why they would reach a deal at the debt ceiling deadline either other than they have more chips to play with now.

While my wife is non-essential, her department still has money set aside so that they can still pay salaries for a undetermined period of time. So luckily she's still getting paid. Rumor is that they have 4 weeks worth of funding, and there's no way this nonsense goes on for that long.

Simply put, the House Republicans have become economic terrorists.

And people like wrangor think it's just fine to play potentially deadly games with the nation's economy like this in an effort to score future political points. Nevermind that since ACA passed the Congress and was signed into law we have had a presidential election where the Republicans made it clear the election was a referendum on ACA....and lost handily...and that the Supreme Court of the United States has reaffirmed the constitutionality of the law.

So long as we're clear the 'economic terrorists' are playing by the rules. And the 'terrorists' would likely counter your assertions by stating they believe ACA is an even deadlier game to play with our economy... so from their perspective, they're taking one for the team by exposing themselves to the name-calling and accusations the average ill-informed citizen is pouring on them.

So they're suicide bombers.

They're cutting off their nose to spite human civilization. Sure you CAN cut off your nose but the body is designed in a way that you're not supposed to do it and survive.

I don't know how any reasonable person could believe that ACA would be worse for the economy than a debt default.

But even if they could, no reasonable person could believe that the ACA is going to get repealed by this while Dems control the Senate and White House.

Based on those two items, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that most of the tea party diehards are doing what they are doing because they promised their tea party primary voters that they would. Now you can spin that two ways - either (a) they are merely representing their constituent's wishes by doing something futile and harmful for the country, or (b) they are cynical pols who want to hold on to their cushy political jobs by doing something futile and harmful for the country.

Either way, they're doing something futile and harmful for the country.

Republicans say Obamacare will destroy economy

Republicans force a default on the nation's debt

Economy is destroyed

Republicans claim Obamacare destroyed the economy

Tea Partiers rejoice

Forever. This is the end of America at the hands of the commie socialists that we've heard about on the fair and balanced news outlets for some time. The Tea Party fought valiantly, but in the end, they couldn't save the Constitution from the liberal attack.

Damn. It's just like Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. Beatrix opens his mouth and Wrangor's words come out.

And ACA is not a "game", it's now a law. Do you believe the Republicans can just ignore laws that they don't like....or use procedure to shut down the government if everyone else will not accede to their demands? Evidently so.

Robert... that might be the hardest you've ever hit me... I thought we were friends... Don't get me wrong, I agree with much of what Wrangor says, but (shockingly enough for a short bus kid) I come up with stuff on my own sometimes. To your question, I don't perceive these guys as ignoring the law, rather I perceive them as asking for some tweaks and delays. Pretty much everyone agrees tweaks are needed. What's the big fucking deal?

The deal is they already had time to tweak it WHEN THEY NEGOTIATED THE BILL BEFORE IT WAS SIGNED INTO LAW. That's when you tweak it. That's the way the system works. You don't tweak the law before it's ever implemented. How would you even know what to tweak? The process is quite simple: the bill is passed, it's signed into law, it's implemented. That's the way it works. That's the way it has always worked and now suddenly after 200+ years of governance the Tea Partiers have decided that they don't like this system. What the fuck is wrong with them?

You lost me. Haven't we been tweaking the fuck outta this already?

I'm talking about Congress tweaking it at this point. We're not going to sit back and let the GOP turn the bill into whatever the hell they want or delay the government indefinitely while they have their pity party. If they delay implementation for a year now, they're just going to do the same shit in a year when it's about to be reimplemented. Democrats cannot in good conscience let this bill be delayed or they're bending over and letting the GOP ravish them.

Hell maybe the GOP's brilliant plan is to delay it a year until the midterm elections when they think they can have both chambers of Congress controlled so they can then nix this whole deal.

They could have discussed the tweaks over the past three years and they didn't.

They can pass the CR and start committee hearings. Any tweaks will take time.

You do realize the Vitter Amendment is a cynical scam to cut the wages of Congressional staff members while keeping salaries of Members of Congress static, don't you?

How about my earlier offer:

Allow people to buy insurance from exchanges but delay penalties for a year

PLUS

Enact a law that demands every sale or transfer of ownership of any gun, rifle or weapon that shoots bullets go through background checks.

If the GOP is making the Dems do something they don't want to do, why shouldn't the GOP have to pony up?

They don't want to tweak it. They want to delay and destroy.
