NFL Year 2022. Superbowl Winner: Kansas City Chiefs!

Romo went from somewhat refreshing to extremely annoying in record time.

Romo was an annoying player so the surprise was that he was a somewhat refreshing commentator.

He’s moving into shtick now. Have you ever gone back and watched ACC hoops from the early 80s? Former coach Dick Vitale gave good straight up color commentary before it was all shtick.

On the flip side Gronk is surprisingly good in the studio. I guess he played up the dumb jock thing in his playing days and ads.

Romo is going the Vitale route—Vitale was actually Very good in the early years, before becoming unwatchable later.

I'm sure I'm late to the party here, but has anyone told CBS that Romo is terrible? I'm not sure that they know, and someone should really tell them. He makes me not want to watch football games.
I thought Romo was good his first year. Ever since, it sounds like he's calling the game on laughing gas. Worst #1 color guy by a mile.

His knee looked pretty f’ed up on the replay. Looked like a really bad hyperextension.

And I agree, with no routing interest at all, seemed like Cinci jobbed. The weak PI call, no roughing the passer, missed illegal block on the punt. Egregious missed hold on the last play.

The PF call was right, but I’d feel pissed if I were a cinci fan.
The PI call was weak, the rest embellished by Cinci, particularly Burrow on the QB hit-- though they have certainly called some weird shit with QBs this year.

They also missed a PI on the first non-TD by the Chiefs where the ball was dropped and the call upheld on replay. Too busy looking to see if he caught the ball to throw the flag. And the holding call on the Pacheco run that negated the TD was ticky tack as well, though technically correct.

Just glad that the 3rd down do-over didn't affect the outcome, because that was legit weird, though Arrowhead sounded about as loud as any stadium I've ever heard. The rest is typical shit that fans complain about after a close loss. The Chiefs played well considering they had a gimpy QB and lost 4 key starters by the end of 3 quarters. Both teams played the run outstanding. Pacheco never got more than a few yards, and MIxon/Perine the same. I'd venture a guess that the longest runs of the day for both teams were the 3rd down scrambles by both QBs.

Vitale coached my team at a summer basketball camp decades ago; I went in expecting his announcing shtick and instead he was by far the best coach we had (it was like 8 days and coaches rotated every 2). If you showed up early for shoot-around he was there, if you were willing to stay late he did as well, took zero time away unlike most others who had assistants handling 80% of things. Dude absolutely loves basketball, despite the Duke worship.

I remember Vitale doing a game at the Joel and seeing him up close. He was just calmly talking to his partner and the crew but when the camera came on he immediately got into Dickey V mode.

Maybe it is just me but I feel like one of the worst calls in that AFC game was them overturning the spot call that gave KC another chance at a first. I don’t know how you have conclusive evidence to overturn a call on a guy reaching with a ball without any great down the line views

i think the intentional grounding call where i think perine was right there and even Nantz mentioned it after the On air official said no one was in the area.

That one was weird. There doesn’t seem to be a hard and fast standard for in the area (like 5 yards from the ball) but Perine was certainly there.

The next play after the intentional grounding, the Bengals threw a 23 yard pass to Hurst for a first down. After that play, Bengals gained two yards on a pass, threw an incomplete and then Jones sacked Burrow. Hard to say how the IG call changed anything. KC had a huge gain negated by a taunting call on an OL. Officials generally swallow there whistle on those calls in the playoffs. Bengals had a ton of chances to win that game (Mahomes will never have more ridiculous TO than that Garo Yepremian fumble), and they didn't feel like the OL issues really showed up yesterday with the sacks surrendered and the lack of any running game.

What happens after a call doesn’t making it weird or not weird.

Back to Vitale— even though I can’t stand him on TV anymore, I did run into him in Las Vegas at a casino about 20 years ago. He was a great guy, very friendly and we talked Wake Bball for 10 -15 minutes even though I had never met him.

Wow that's awesome

Speaking of broadcaster's Greg Olsen will be the lead analyst for the Super Bowl LVII. Meteoric rise for Olsen. He is solid. Given that the Eagles/Niners game was over early, thought he did solid job trying to keep a non-competitive game interesting.

Yeah, it was clearly a garbage spot so what I couldn't figure out was the ref said the challenge was that the ball was short of the first down rather than just questioning the spot. If they find that the play is inconclusive regarding the first down, do they still change the spot to bring it like an inch or at least closer to the line? FYI, they did have a freeze frame shot coming out of commercial that showed the tip of the ball a bit past whatever yard line that was, and I guess the marker was deemed to be on that line.

I called grounding right when he threw it. He had spiked a few earlier in the game to avoid being hit, but always near somebody. Perine was maybe 5-7 yards past the linemen where the ball landed, but it was in his general direction. I think his previous spikes were a factor, and I'm not sure the ball got past the LOS either, which means it's an automatic grounding. He definitely didn't leave the pocket, so the ball has to get past the LOS.

You can only challenge a spot for first downs or touchdowns. So a spot challenge that doesn’t overturn a call of first down (or not) or touchdown (or not), is an unsuccessful challenge.

isnt it only automatic grounding if a receiver isnt in the area? otherwise every spike would be intentional grounding. if he is outside the pocket it has to be past the line of scrimmage but doesnt need to have a receiver in the area.
