Official 2021 NBA Thread - Preseason (and WNBA Finals talk)

ph and buckets with solid landing spots for big shot BEN!!

fit problem is because he is a really good ball dominant PG, you want the ball in his hands, but any PG that has no shot outside of the paint is tough to play in the modern NBA. that's mitigated for him because he's a big on D, really anything on D, but offensively any fit for him is awkward.

the closest thing would be what MKE built around giannis (no ball dominant guards), but ben isn't good enough to build a team around.

I was going to suggest the Bucks. I don’t think they would be as good, but it would be his best spot.

simmons is a decent bball fit fot the heat, f minus culture fit. jimmy will punch someone for being afraid to shoot a lay up in an elimination game

it’s all about Simmons agreeing to play a role but put him in the Blazers with their shooting, need for a lot of defensive help, and stagger his minutes with Dame who will be the crunch time lead guard and I think that may be the beat fit

How about Simmons on the Celtics as a 4?

Ben needs to change, and doesn’t have it in him to do so

He insisted on not just being the primary ball handler, not just being listed at guard, but being announced as point guard, even when they didn’t start him there

He does work on his shot a lot and seemingly does have a good work ethic but the problem is he doesn’t listen to coaches

Brett said before his last season he expected Ben to shoot 1 three a game. That was ~100 games ago and Ben has shot a dozen threes in that stretch

I was definitely defending Ben to anyone who wanted to argue that he was an efficient scorer without needing to be a shooter, but the NBA is too smart a league not to exploit deficiencies, and his are too glaring

He’s one year into a rookie max extension trying to hold out, a pretty bullshit play for a guy who just collapsed for his second playoffs in a row

Just sick of it, idk what situation he thinks he’s gonna go be “the guy” in that isn’t surrounded by four good shooters and a dominant big already in Philly

Yep. If Simmons was willing to do what it takes to win, he'd do it in Philly and win.

On Sportscenter, Woj was saying how unique and crazy it is for a star player to hold out one year into his first big contract. My first thought was that's what Deshaun Watson is doing as well. And guess what? The Texans are just moving on. Obviously Watson has his legal woes and the Texans aren't contenders, but Watson is also a much better player than Simmons. Philly should go ahead and embrace the new lineup and let Simmons simmer.

So if he simply doesn't show up, do they still have to pay him? I assume he counts against the cap either way, right? When Chandler Parsons and Igoudala didn't show up, that seemed to be a mutual agreement between player and team.

Hard not to see this coming, the guy has been an overhyped bum since "college". If you are projected as the top pick in the draft and can't even manage to carry your team to the tournament, that is the ultimate forecast of future failure. Hell, JC was even able to drag Danny Manning's sorry ass to a play-in game.

Wake shut him down when he was at LSU. Wake put a smaller guy on him, who played off him and let him shoot from outside but not drive. Wake got the road win and Ben didn't score much.

Follow-up,

If he has such a great work ethic, has he shot 10,000 good form practice free throws?

Hawks sign Jahlil Okafor to a non-guaranteed contract. He is expected to compete for the 15th spot on the Hawks roster (ATL has 14 players on guaranteed contracts).

FWIW, here is the NBA Pre-season schedule:

September 28:

Training camps begin.

October 3:

Preseason begins.

October 15:

Preseason ends.

October 16:

October 18:

Last day for teams to sign a player to a rookie scale extension (5:00pm CT).
[RELATED: Players eligible for rookie scale extensions]

Sportscenter brought up a Simmons trade I hadn’t considered. Simmons to the Cavs for Kevin Love and 3 1st round picks. Could Morey and crew pass that up? Perhaps they reset The Process a bit. Maybe they go shopping for a star.

I don't know why Morey thinks he's got any leverage in this scenario. If that's genuinely on the table, then you gotta take that because Simmons's value plummets every day you get closer to the start of the season. There's a lot riding on the Sixers' ability to offload this guy before the season starts...

morey has no leverage but what is ben simmons leverage? he has 4 years left on his deal

the only way that CLE trade works imo is if it's a 3 teamer, morey isn't going to want a bunch of picks now for embiids title contender window. he needs a win-now piece from the trade. get a third team that is ready to blow it up to take the picks and give the 76ers a useful piece.

honestly the 76ers should be packaging ben WITH assets to get a better player, not asking for a star AND stuff as has been rumored

Official 2021 NBA Draft - Farewell, Condor (JJ Redick retires) and Ben Simmons?

That is what they’re trying to do, but who is going to give up a top 15 player for Simmons and change? They want Dame.

yeah, we've discussed rich paul's stupidity plenty, but i think when you couple rich paul with daryl morey you've got two really dumb, arrogant people who both think that they're the smartest person in the room

they should take Buddy and Bagley and be done with this mess

this was kind of jarring to read

Ben Simmons has been overrated and people finally realized it after the Hawks series. That’s what much of the backlash is about.

One of the Sportscenter trades was Haliburton, Buddy, and Bagley. The Sixers should take that and run. Haliburton, Buddy, Korkmaz, Harris, and Embiid is a nice starting lineup. The bench is good too Maxey, Thybulle, Green, Bball Paul, and Bagley.

The Kings would all of a sudden have two elite defenders.
