Official Election Month Thread: COUP falls short, nothing to see here

North Dakota GOP Senator Kevin Cramer was on Meet the Press this morning defending what Trump is doing. He basically said this was all perfectly normal procedure to contest the results and ask for recounts and all the rest, made a snarky remark about Trump supporters not resorting to violence (as opposed to all those antifa Democrats I guess), and refused to say that Biden had won the election, but did say that at some point "if Biden wins" the transition process will need to begin. Chuck Todd actually did try to pin him down, pointing out that three other elections since 2000 were all considerably closer (2004, 2012, 2016) without the results being contested, and that Trump and his minions like Giuliani were deliberately trying to delegitimize the election process itself. Cramer seemed clearly uncomfortable and became increasingly defensive as the interview went on. At the end of the interview Todd thanked Cramer for agreeing to appear, as apparently MTP had a difficult time getting any Congressional Republicans to appear on the show this weekend.

On ABC's This Week even Chris Christie slammed Trump's legal teams as a "national embarrassment", said that if they had evidence of vote fraud they needed to produce it immediately, and basically said that he ought to concede. He did get really angry when the Democratic consultant on the roundtable called him and other Republicans out for supporting Trump all along and said that at some point Republicans like Christie are going to have to decide what they support, the national interest or Trump's interests and feelings. He blew up at that.

But, yeah, all of this is just a big nothingburger with no disturbing signs for the future, and leading Republicans aren't still lemmings trembling at the thought of facing Trump's wrath. For good measure, there was a brief clip of Senator Susan Collins in a quavering voice saying that she just didn't approve of Trump firing so many people recently, and looking very concerned as usual. The general consensus on both roundtables was that Trump isn't going away after the election, and that he'll be plaguing Republicans well into the future. Stephanopoulos said that he's been hearing around DC that Trump's endgame might be to eventually allow the transition to begin and agree to leave office, but that he'll never formally concede, will continue to convince his supporters that the election was stolen, and will announce that he's already planning on running again in 2024. Fun times.

It’s pretty amazing that Trumpism has caused Republicans to forget how elections usually go. We usually know the President elect on Election Night. Media outlets call the winner. We don’t wait until certification. There’s not open talk of a constitutional crisis. Trump did not promise a peaceful transition of power and that’s what we are seeing.

People are rejecting what they’ve seen with their eyes and ears to claim something very unusual is actually quite normal.

Right. Trump and the GOP are not trying to make sure we have an accurate accounting of the votes. They are trying to overturn what we know to be the rightful outcome. That is a coup attempt. Are some thinking a coup attempt can only be violent? There have been some attempts and threats for that, as well.

"They are trying to overturn WHAT WE KNOW to be the rightful outcome".
C'mon, it's a charade and even the slightest irregularities aren't going to change the result. But aren't his supporters entitled to make sure the election counting were all legitimate? The options are dwindling by the hours.
Let the millions the are in denial have their say and be done with it. I think the hype that Biden is being so hampered by the process is all drama. Biden has been in government for 47 years; he knows the score.
And I still don't believe the process is "subverting the existing government". Just say that what Trump is doing is just pissing you off to no end and be done with it.

The last time we had a delayed transition of power, 9/11 happened months later. Stop acting like this is normal, Pop. This is not normal. This is what a hostile transition of power looks like. It’s likely we will never see a Republican administration peacefully transition again.

Exhibit 1A of the conservative brain rot that rationalizes this behavior.

Well, Trump's just doing this to piss off the libs so all is well. No need to worry about setting terrible precedents for future elections, or what it says about what the GOP has become.

Of course you don't believe it.

It’s not even making sure the election counting was legitimate because what they are implying is fucking insane conspiracy theories. Even in cases outside conspiracy, like the one that was just tossed in PA, they had two people on the lawsuit whose vote was invalid and not counted, the remedy wasn’t to allow those two peoples votes to count it was to not count the other 6+ million votes.

For conspiracy here in Georgia it’s now moved to the Governor, the one everyone previous railed on for being a shitty SOS and doing all he could to prevent people from voting, is in the plot with Venezuela and voting machines to screw Trump. Nothing is based in reality, we had a risk limiting audit that recounted all the ballots by hand. The new voting system was you vote on a machine, the machine prints out your vote, you look at your printed vote and make sure it’s what you voted, you scan the vote for documentation, and then it goes in a secure ballot box. The electronic card is then used to count the vote. The votes that were just counted were the paper ballots that were printed off that you looked at to see they were correct. See the problem on the electronic voting machines changed the votes, you have the damn piece of paper, and after counting the paper it matched the electronic count. Nothing is grounded in reality and anyone saying just let it play out is a shitty enabler.

Hasn’t been much “normal” this year, has there?

When your party elected this moron who has caused needless death across the nation and shat all over American democracy, it takes some real fucking stupidity to look at an attempted coup and just be like “lol 2020 amirite?”

No BBD, as usual, you missed the point.
I have more important things in my life to be concerned with than the games the “moron” is playing in the White House.
What is getting all of Dems titties in a knot is exactly what the SOB wants. I personally won’t give him the satisfaction.
I will leave it to you all who are much smarter than I.

Pop, what would you do if Trump is still in the WH on January 21? You hitting the streets? Or is it "LOL libs?"

It’s perfectly normal for Presidents to refuse to leave the White House after losing.

FIFY.

Good riddance to trumpf and his minions. :dumb:
