Golf is weird

I shot -3 on back to back 9 hole rounds last week then played in a captains choice tournament on Monday as the A player and contributed maybe 5 shots

I've found over the years that just going out and playing more is the best way to improve your scores vs. getting lessons or getting new equipment.

The only way to get better than you have been is to play and practice more than you have in the past. Hopefully a combination of the two. The reason lessons play a role is that if you practice bad habits your improvement is limited - you need to know the right stuff to practice. Equipment is the final piece of the puzzle and by far the least important.

Man, that's bananas. Did you have an off day or was your team on fire?

I can see a situation where the A is a super-conservative, but consistent player. Gets put on a team with a D that can drive, but not do anything else, and the B and Cs that have a short game. Is that what happened?

Maybe you're just not a team player?

Nah I love any team format. I play more team events than my own ball these days

I just sucked man. Couldn’t hit a shot. Was losing my driver right and couldn’t keep an iron shot on the stick. Didn’t make a putt either. Pretty useless.

I got back in the gym over the weekend for the first time in 2 months and I really think that played a big part.

I find that if I'm working out irregullarly, it is impossible for me to play consistent golf

Meanwhile, I played my ass off and contributed about a hole a round in a 2-man best ball (member-guest) tournament last month.

This is the first year I've kept an official handicap.... I'm posting every score, but it's amazing how much shooting a couple of decent rounds on an easy (but suspiciously highly sloped/rated) course like Grandover West can screw everything up.

I've played Maple Chase a dozen times in the last 20 rounds. My best score there is 89. My average is 93+... yet , my handicap has been stuck at 13 for a month.

I dont think I've ever actually won a bet there, solely because I posted a couple of 79s and a 81 on an entirely different course at the beginning of the year.

Won a scramble tournament yesterday. I'm normally the long hitter in the group (290-300), but one of our guys consistently hit the ball 320+. He flew it almost all the way to the pin (and stuck it) on a par 4 I shot at 338 on the rangefinder. Crazy stuff.

Go play Jamestown Park a few times if you want a bigger handicap. That fucker is crazy long.

That's bananas long. My playgroup considers 280-290 to be bombing it. I can't imagine playing with someone that could consistently hit over a 300 yard drive. The utility of that on the courses I play would be fairly limited (other than Jamestown).

I had a really weird round yesterday evening. Through 8 holes I had 9 putts, including a 3-putt - and was even par. I could not hit a green in regulation but was chipping and putting out of my ass. I ended up shooting +3 with 9 or 10 1-putts and a chip-in. Tough course - rating = 74+.

I'm only a couple of weeks away from my bucket list trip to Scotland! I'm looking for some input on caddies - the pros and cons of getting them. They are not cheap, but I want the full experience...

I am thinking I want to get a caddie at 2-4 of the 7 courses we are playing and wondered if any of you that have played over there have any ideas as to where they are more important, enjoyable, key to the experience, etc...? We are playing Royal Troon, Prestwick, Turnberry Ailsa, The Old Course, Crail Balcomie, Kingsbarns, and Carnoustie...
My first thought is to use a caddie at Troon, The Old Course and Carnoustie... Any thoughts on that? Or anywhere else I should add?

Troon - no caddie
Old Course - caddie
Prestwick - caddie (so many blind shots)
Turnberry - caddie
Crail - no caddie
Kingsbarns - no caddie (already expensive enough)
Carnoustie - no caddie

Just played Turnberry and the grass is long right now. Probably need a caddie to help track/search for balls.

edit: Prestwick is an easy enough walk to where you don't need one but at least get a yardage book. if you took that away and added one i would go with Troon. i find Carnoustie pretty straight forward (but difficult).

My bachelor party is going to be at the Ryder Cup next year (Whistling Straits). We'll likely try to get a round or two in as well.

Have recommendations for both a nice course and then a drinking course?

Drinking course would be either River or Meadows for Blackwolf Run. You can take carts, so the beer can flow and it's tons of fun. I would recommend River. It's a littler tougher, but it's Top 100. I assume people can play there during the Ryder Cup. I would also assume the Irish would be closed due to grandstands, etc. Irish and Straits course are adjacent to each other.

Erin Hills is amazing if you can fit it in. I would book the trip like right now though. I'm sure it's going to be packed. You won't be disappointed. Probably half of our guys preferred Erin to the Straits course.

Erin Hills is so damn pure. Love that place, but given that it's walking only might not be the best for a bachelor party.

Need help from you Pit golfers. My bachelor party is in Vegas over Labor Day, and we're looking for a reasonable (<$150 all in) place to play. I realize it's going to be brutally hot, but this will kill 5 hours outside of the casinos, and I've never played out there. Don't want to have to Uber/shuttle too far.

Kingsbarns is by far the hardest walk of the bunch. I'd go with a caddie there and just fore caddie it at Turnberry if cost is a concern.

I hit the new Callaway Epic driver yesterday. I think I'm about to spend $529.

Also hit the 4 hybrid.
