Ongoing NC GOP debacle thread

Do other states have this much power over municipal governance?

The state is the sovereign, so municipalities in all states have only as much power as the state gives them. Subject to be modified at any time by the state

Sure but to the point of setting specific rules for individual municipalities?

Coach K came out against HB2 as a result of Albany cancelling a game against them this season.

what a bummer

Once again, Charlotte tried to do the right thing for the trans community and is getting screwed by the Pubs in Raleigh.

This precedent will probably also force the hand of the NCAA and PGA to move any NCAA tourney regionals and the Wells Fargo tournament.

George Shinn is clapping in his grave.

(I know he's alive)

I honestly think the NBA picked New Orleans to add an extra bit of salt to the decision.

Maybe NCAA - PGA no way. Quail Hollow is hosting the 2017 PGA Championship next year and Wells Fargo will be in Wilmington. No way either of those two get moved I wouldn't think.

It has been reported that the PGA events were possibly also threatened, but I don't know the depth of planning they need to pull off a PGA Championship, they may be in too deep now.

Any number of sporting events in North Carolina are under threat because of HB2, from the NBA All-Star Game and PGA Championship in Charlotte in 2017 to NCAA basketball subregionals in Greensboro in 2017 and Charlotte in 2018, as well as several NCAA championships in the Triangle.

A couple months ago when Silver was asked about whether he would consider moving the All-Star game from Charlotte because of the legislation, it sounded like he was building an all-or-nothing defense for keeping it in Charlotte. He mentioned how it didn't make a lot of sense to pull the all-star game as a show of the NBA's support, and then abandon the Hornets there.

Good point including this. Folks focus on the NCAA basketball tournament events in NC, but tend to overlook the fact that the NCAA holds many other events in NC in other sports -- e.g., Cary has hosted 4 men's soccer championships in the past 11 years and 7 women's soccer championships in the past 13 years.

Lt. Gov. Dan Forest @LtGovDanForest
Cumulative GDP Growth 4Q 2012 to 4Q 2015
U.S. = 11.5%
North Carolina = 15.8%

(currently #4 fastest-growing state since 2013)

The really wacky thing there is that the immigrant population is growing really quickly too! WEIRD because on the other thread you were certain that led to poverty, not GDP growth.

Never underestimate the power of local GOP leadership to outpace national Dem incompetence.

I'm excited to see who Pat blames for losing the All Star Game. The Charlotte City Council? The Human Rights Campaign? Corporate bullies like Apple and America Airlines? The media? Obviously it's not his fault nor the fault of the legislature.
