If I remember correctly, extreme conservatives in the 50s and 60s said that the civil rights movement was secretly a communist operation to undermine America as well, and that its leadership was full of closet communists. They always do seem to need a "hidden" enemy to fight and rally against.
 
They have to distract from people trying to realize the American Dream for themselves by lying and saying it’s something else.

It’s not Black people seeking civil rights because “all men are created equal.” It’s communists trying to spark unrest.

It’s not Muslims seeking freedom of religion. It’s religious extremists trying to establish Sharia Law.

It’s not kneeling to protest police brutality because we are “innocent until proven guilty.” It’s protesting against the military.

They aren’t people fleeing their country to legally seek asylum. They’re caravans trying to force their way into this country.

It’s not a movement to say Black Lives Matter. It’s a movement to say ONLY Black Lives Matter.

They always come up a way to dismiss people seeking their rights.

Yeah this has never changed. Conservatives in power just believe there must be some larger nefarious scheme going on because they're predominantly puppets for corporate and evangelical interests. They just assume the only reason anyone wants to make a change to the status quo is that they're being compensated for doing so and can't fathom another reason people may seek to do so.
