Taxing the wealthy more..

Mark Cuban:

"So be Patriotic. Go out there and get rich. Get so obnoxiously rich that when that tax bill comes , your first thought will be to choke on how big a check you have to write. Your 2nd thought will be "what a great problem to have", and your 3rd should be a recognition that in paying your taxes you are helping to support millions of Americans that are not as fortunate as you.

In these times of "The Great Recession" we shouldn't be trying to shift the benefits of wealth behind some curtain. We should be celebrating and encouraging people to make as much money as they can. Profits equal tax money. While some people might find it distasteful to pay taxes. I don't. I find it Patriotic."

Cuban's the man. Great quote.

+1. Pos Rep. Go Mavs. Hate on Cuban all you want for being obnoxious in the past, but he's really cleaned up and done some awesome things worthy of pos rep in his career as owner of the Mavs.

It is morally wrong and economically counterproductive to point a gun at a citizen and take that citizen's honest earnings. This is true whether it is done by an individual or by a group. Finding other people who want to share in the booty and are willing to "vote" to make it seem legitimate does not change the moral staus or the economic effect of this armed robbery. Taxing successful, productive people more will reduce their incentive and their ability to shoulder the burden of the growing number of looters and moochers. Instead of earning our living by producing goods and services we are starting to try to live by taxing one another and this will end badly. Government should be limited to its legitimate functions and these legitimate functions should be financed through noncoercive means. No WFU graduate should covet another citizen's honest earnings enough to vote to take those earnings by force. It is a deadly sin.

What are some of these "non-coercive means"?

I take it you've never been in a public school, wouldn't call the police if your house was being robbed, wouldn't call for your country to defend itself if attacked, and have never driven on a public road?

Taxing the wealthy the same amount they paid in the 1990s isn't class warfare, it's the correction of an error made in the 2000s that led to our crippling deficits in first place. We simply cut revenues to sharply, and need to course correct. It's more apt to think of the coming change as the unnatural Bush tax holiday coming to an end. So the top bracket should enjoy what it was able to amass while the damaging aberration lasted, but now its back to the fiscal realities of operating a superpower.

How are tax cuts unnatural? Kennedy and Clinton cut taxes. Gross receipts increased under both, as well as under Bush. Isn't that the goal, especially when operating an entitlement state of 300 million?

No matter how people try to spin this, the money is better left in the private sector to be spent in a more efficient, economically sound manner.

Your point that this extra cash is something the rich with "invest" is a reason why the government should have it? Are you serious? We need more money in the private sector to be invested. Whether it be stocks, bonds, venture capital, etc.. That is a GREAT reason why these increases in tax will hurt the economy. And you also said they are more likely to "save" it.. Well no matter how much people save, it will be spent eventually, and I can damn guarantee you, if a wealthy person has a better "cushion" of savings, they will spend more money over time.

That would all be true but for the fact we have the mother of all national debts we need to pay down. Leaving the money in my hands or your hands isn't going to make that go away.

What is a legitimate argument to have (and one our national is going to continue to have) is how much money should come from cost cuts and how much from new revenue streams. It is also legitimate to ask how much more ALL Americans should be asked to contribute.

But all of us are going to end up paying more taxes. It is just an ugly reality. The question is, really, how much more vs. how much to cut.

Clinton had the largest tax increase in history...but don't be bothered by facts.

Under Bush, really? Why did we raise the debt ceiling 7 times in the 2000's with all of that additional income?

Gross receipts can increase when there is a budget deficit. And they did.

Yep.

True, but why weren't the additional gross receipts used to pay down the debt?
