Caught the series premier the other night and wanted to know what others thought about it.
My initial reaction was that there was a little too much fake drama. Perhaps I was misinformed as to what this show was going to be, but there just seemed to be too many personal relationships as opposed to portraying how a news room is actually run. I will admit, I have never worked in a news room, so perhaps it is just one big intertwining date fest with tons of interpersonal relations, who knew?
After getting over that minor issue though, I thought the show as a whole was pretty good. Jeff Daniels is one of my favorite actors, and I thought he did a tremendous job in this role. I also like that it is using actual news stories from 2010, so it allows for the viewer to see how shows come together with actual breaking news/tragedies.
Hopefully they can develop characters within the confines of the newsroom, and keep the out of office extracurriculars to a minimum (i know they didn't actually take the relations out of the news room in the pilot, but i'm worried it's coming). Another thing that concerns me is how "preachy" this show could potentially get. Personally, i'm pretty middle of the road, so my feathers aren't going to be ruffled one way or another, but I could see this coming off as a little too idealistic and rustling a few jimmies.
If anyone has actually worked in a news room or similar environment, i'd like to hear their take on how tragic news develops within a news room, and if this is even a remotely accurate portrayal?
