We have two strollers right now, and are looking for our third. I know there are people who get by with fewer, but as has been mentioned above, there are just different needs for different situations.
1) Graco frame stroller - this was fairly inexpensive and is pretty no frills...just got popping the car seat onto it.
As you suggest, once they outgrow the infant car seat this becomes obsolete, but at that point you could re-sell it or hand it down to someone else if you didn't want to store it. We found it really worthwhile to have because it made transfer from home to car to stroller super easy when baby was sleeping or just snug in the car seat. And it's fairly minimal and can fold up for the car and what not.
2) BOB - We did a lot of debating between BOB and CitiMini, and ended up liking the Bob better in test drives and when talking to friends. But I think you can be happy with either. I think the BOB is better for actual jogging though, which is kind of what tipped for us.
We use this ALL THE TIME now, and it is awesome for the city, getting around on bumpy sidewalks and what not. Also great on grass and dirt and everything since it has big wheels. The drawback is that even when folded down it is pretty big and sort of heavy, so it's tough to pack in the car with other things or to fly with or something like that.
3) Umbrella stroller - This is the one we're researching now. Have heard good things about Maclearens, but they're so expensive. Have a First Years stroller on our wish list now, but still considering switching.
Anyone feel strongly about their umbrella stroller one way or the other? We'll probably still use our jogger most of the time, but want something easy to pack and travel with.
