When we say we are now competitive in the NIL game, what does that mean? Any ballpark on $ available to the basketball program on an annual basis? How many ACC-caliber players can we land each year with our budget?

Where does that rank us nationally? Are we top 50? Enough to even dream of a Final Four again?

I would imagine this is tough to know right now.

Yeah I don't expect I'll ever know the full answer to those seemingly simple questions, which makes the whole system at least a little bit frustrating. But I throw the questions out into the sphere in case anyone wants to help make it even a little less muddy.

As far as benchmarks available to us under the same umbrella organization it’s my understanding that we are competing well.

We are right in-line with our P6 (P5) programs in terms of what has been raised / our goals.

This past year, we were top 30ish in terms of NIL Collective budgets and will be higher in 2024.

Last year, the high-end was over $3 million. Have heard that Villanova spent that much to add transfers and keep key guys in place, and they played in the NIT. Would guess that it varies by a lot. Kansas paid seven figures for Dickinson alone. Guessing that schools like BC paid very little.

All accurate. There are onlyn a handful of programs (you can probably name them) whose budgets are over 3 million.

Interesting that Ivy League isn't listed:
  • No one may play more than 4 years
  • Essentially no transfer portal adds, only losses of their highest rated players
  • Little to no NIL
  • They appear to adhere some legit admissions requirements
The Ivy League is in the top half of conferences #14 out of 32, between Tier 3 WAC and Tier 3 CUSA... Oh, in 2023 Princeton beat Tier #1 Arizona and #1 Mizzou; in 2024, Yale beat Tier #1 Auburn. Ivy League teams seem to have evey disadvantage, but they find and develop solid student-athletes and play quality basketball.

How many teams does that get them in the tournament?

The Ivy League has more NCAAT success than more than half the conferences that play by different rules.

Not saying the Ivy League plays on the power conference level; just interesting that the Ivy League was the one conference that refused to change its rules to comply with the major changes that impacted college basketball:

  • The extra COVID year
  • Adding players via the transfer portal
  • Luring and/or keeping players via NIL
Yet, the Ivy League got better vis-a-vis the other conferences. Think it goes to show that finding talent via HS recruiting and then developing it has been lost in college basketball, except for the Ivy League, and they have improved because no one else is doing it that way. Classic moneyball.

How did their tournament bids improve?

Every disadvantage except having three of the biggest academic brands in the US and the world in Harvard, Princeton, and Yale.

Most of the country could care less if you played basketball at UNC or Kansas but for most people, it’s a big deal to graduate from Harvard, Princeton, or Yale. That prestige and the opportunities it provides makes up for a bunch of NIL $$$$.

Also isn’t one of the best young talents in the Ivy League in the portal from Harvard right now?

Yep. There are a ton of Ivy League players in the portal right now, and many of them will go to power conferences. They will add no one from the portal, and still be better than most of the other conferences.

Maybe. You can’t really know that.
