Trump plan pays for immigration crackdown with cuts to coastal, air security

The proposed budget cuts for the Coast Guard, TSA and FEMA would be 'devastating' and undermine the fight against terrorism, smuggling and illegal immigration, critics say.

"The Trump administration wants to gut the Coast Guard and make deep cuts in airport and rail security to help pay for its crackdown on illegal immigration, according to internal budget documents reviewed by POLITICO — a move that lawmakers and security experts say defies logic if the White House is serious about defending against terrorism and keeping out undocumented foreigners.

The Office of Management and Budget is seeking a 14 percent cut to the Coast Guard's $9.1 billion budget, the draft documents show, even as it proposes major increases to other Department of Homeland Security agencies to hire more border agents and immigration officers and construct a physical barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border."

I see Trump never saw Bad Boys 2. Johnny Tapia moves a lot of product by boat.

Have stopped following threads on the Tunnels, but was coming here to post quickly about this. http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/07/politics/coast-guard-cuts/index.html Team Trump proves every day that they have no clue what they are doing. building a wall that will push smugglers out to sea, and paying for it by a massive cut to sea interdiction, goes on an early top 10 list of completely idiotic ideas floated by this administration.

Carry on.

my sister is in the Coast Guard and they are all livid (well, except the Trumpshills). I guess Trump's team doesn't realize the coast is also a border, and the USCG catches more people than CBP.

Finally, some real news, odd WakeForestRanger wasn't all over this one

Washington (CNN)Illegal Southwest border crossings were down 40% last month, according to just released Customs and Border Protection numbers -- a sign that President Donald Trump's hardline rhetoric and policies on immigration may be having a deterrent effect.

Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly himself announced the month-to-month numbers, statistics that CBP usually quietly posts on its website without fanfare.
According to CBP data, the 40% drop in illegal Southwest border crossings from January to February is far outside normal seasonal trends. Typically, the January to February change is actually an increase of 10% to 20%.

[h=1]Trump border wall: Texans receiving letters about their land[/h]
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-border-wall-texans-receiving-letters-about-their-land/

Yvette Salinas, a Texan whose ailing mother owns a small parcel of land with her siblings near the Rio Grande was informed by the “Declaration of Taking” letter sent by DOJ that her 1.2 acres was worth $2,900, according to a story in the Texas Observer. She told the Observer that the family’s 16 acres has been in her family for five generations. The government’s letter asks recipients to sign in order to receive compensation, acknowledge that they “do not have an interest” in the case or do not intend to make a claim. It doesn’t really say what landowners should do if, like Salinas, they don’t want to sell their land.
Salinas called the letter “scary” and said “you feel you have to sign.” Her family is consulting a lawyer about its next steps. If other border landowners have the same reluctance to sell as Salinas, the government may have a long battle ahead to secure all the land necessary for the wall, given that the federal government doesn’t own most of it. The nearly 2,000-mile southern border is composed of federal, state, tribal and private lands. There are 632 miles of federal or tribal land -- 33 percent -- and the other 67 percent, most of which is in Texas, is private or state-owned, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The Washington Post points out that the president would need Congress to pass a bill to acquire the tribal lands for his wall.

one wonders if those God Fearin' Salinases voted for Trump

I too often wonder if these people were open border hope and change people that voted for Obama and Hillary. I know one thing is for sure it will be hard to get the answer from one of these groups.

So what's your solution?

Border wall funding likely to be put on hold

He said the Senate and House leadership are very close to negotiating a bill to fund government for the rest of 2017.

Adding a supplemental spending bill requested by Trump to pay for military activities and a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border would complicate the talks and should be dealt with at a later date, Blunt added.

"We have the FY17 defense bill," Blunt said, noting it is the top priority of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and could be used as a vehicle to pass bills funding other federal departments.
