Wake (#9 CFP, #5 SOR) at UNC (UNC-2.5) 12:00 noon, ABC

Clawson say we need an avg defense. Crap if you put up 55 you just need one that shows up 25% of the time. We do t even need that we just need a defense that plays smart. How many times have the big stops they have gotten been wiped out by dumb penalties (ie incomplete pass then unnecessary roughness when the play should have been dead.

The defense requires the offense to play nearly perfect games.

We are a basketball school, never forget that.

College basketball is nothing compared to football these days. Let's just keep getting better on the gridiron, being relevant in football is huuuuuuge.

Also we've already been to the Orange Bowl, be cool to change it up and hit up ATL or even Phoenix

Based on some of Clawsons comments and interviews this week, he loves Wake and has turned down offers, which is cool. But that means people will poach coordinators instead.

Imagine this team with Elko

Or Lea.

Or imagine the '06 team with Calhoun

We aren't going to the Orange Bowl this year. Any chance of that went away yesterday. We can still win the ACC Championship and end up in the Peach Bowl or Fiesta Bowl.

Looking at the game Carolina played before us at Notre Dame they scored 34 points and had 11 possessions in the game including the final possession of the game when the game ended where they had the ball at the Notre Dame 4 yd line. ND scored 44 points in 11 possessions including a possession at the end of the half. If that game had 4 more possessions and Notre Dame scored 3 points and had a interception at their own 20 yd line would Carolina have won that game? I think the likely answer is yes.

LOL - Death, taxes, and ChrisL attempting to polish this turd of a defense

So honest questions. Preface to say I think ND has what is generally considered to be a pretty good college defense. If they had played a 15 possession game against UNC there instead of 11, then the game would have been in the 50s.

Do you think that a ND type program has the inherent advantages that would allow them to play high number of possession football regarding defensive depth?

Also, if ND had had 4 bad possessions in a game that had more total possessions, would UNC have likely won the game?

There is a complimentary aspect to football. If you are scoring quickly and have a high number of possessions in a game, then multiple poor possessions can result in big swings in points and puts stress on a defense that is depth challenged especially if they have injuries in the game.

through the first 11 possessions of the game yesterday, we held them to 27 points. that's better than ND's defense did, but that was middle 3rd quarter instead of the end of the game.

If we change our offensive philosophy and tempo to match NDs, we might have only scored 17.

We got abused by one of the worst offensive lines in the P5 yesterday.

NC gained 554 yards against ND in south bend last week in 73 plays.

Yesterday 546 in 78 plays.

The difference in the 2 games is that Notre Dame's offense was more effective against Carolina's defense over the course of the game than we were.

I'm not suggesting we change our offensive philosophy but to act like it has no impact on our defense's performance is not accurate.

I see this side of the argument. It is not either/or. There are situations where slowing the offense makes the most sense. Yesterday (and last year) required a different game plan once we got ahead: 1) to take possessions away from UNC; and 2) to rest our defense. It sounds crazy but the game may have turned out differently if Perry’s 67 yard TD had been a sustained 5 minute drive culminating in a field goal.

But football is crazy. If they call offsides on the interception, we probably win.

As has been discussed often, we have defensive injuries every year. EVERY YEAR. And so it would make sense to examine every possible cause for injuries. Training. Weekly preparation. The pace we choose to play offensively. All of that.

Or, we can keep doing what we have been doing and talk about how golly, once guys went out we just ran out of bodies to try to stop them.

Can anyone point to stats that we have more injuries on defense than the average for other teams? If so, that is a valid point, but not sure that we do.

I know State and Clemson have had a bunch of defensive guys with season-ending injuries. If anything I think we're probably below average for injuries

Didn’t we completely overhaul our S&C program this off-season?

We did overhaul S&C. And yes, Clemson and NCSU have had a ton of defensive injuries. They both looked plenty stout defensively yesterday. Makes one wonder how effectively we are recruiting depth on the defensive side of the ball.

Not sure about complete overhaul, but significant changes with the addition of Jason George as Director of Integrated High Performance overseeing existing staff in several areas including strength and conditioning.
