"We're hanging our hat on Tanner Price"

We had good wr and Galloway and a good team that year. Minus our pitiful kicker. Stachitas could not get the ball to givens or camp.

Will people ever stop bashing Newman? Pretty sure that was actually the year Newman set the Wake record for consecutive makes, but, like 95% of collegiate kickers, he wasn't great under pressure. Sam Swank was as good as a collegiate kicker gets..no need to call anyone who isn't him "pitiful".

I don't remember Cross being expected to be our starting QB at any time really.

I am sure Lectro compared him to Phillip Rivers.

IIRC..going into Presby that year, it was thought to be a three man battle with Stachitas having only a slight lead.

Going into spring ball in 2010 wasn't Cross supposed to be the guy? Or maybe it was fall camp? Pretty sure the reports were he looked good in 2009 when he was redshirting.

I don't think Newman ever made a clutch kick at Wake. I disagree that 95% of college kickers never make a clutch kick.

Chris has just forgotten the Cross hype.

Newman is probably the second best kicker in Wake history and he continues to get shit on. He didn't have a great senior year which sucks but he was damn consistent over his first three years.

Went through all 2009-2012 games and looked for ones decided by a TD or less. Here are the ones in which Jimmy kicked a field goal latish in the 4th quarter or in OT:

28-27 loss to Miami, missed a 60 yd field goal as time expired: http://espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=293040154&period=4
30-27 loss to GT, made a 34 yd field goal in OT, GT scored a TD in its OT try: http://espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=293110059&period=5
24-20 loss to GT, made a 28 yd field goal to take the lead with 2:25 to go, GT scored a TD to win: http://espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=302750154&period=4
24-17 loss to ND, missed a 42 yd field goal with 5:30 to go, ND already held a TD lead: http://espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=313090154&period=4
31-28 loss to Clemson, missed a 32 yd field goal with 9 to go, Clemson scored a TD to tie it and then a field goal to win it: http://espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=313160228&period=4
23-17 loss to Mississippi State, made a 46 yd field goal with 3:30 to go, brought score within a TD, Mississippi State gave the ball back with 2:15 to go (Wake gained a total of 3 yds on that possession): http://espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=313640154&period=4

So that's 3-3 in "clutch" situations..the misses:

Miami: only time Newman could have won a game with a kick. He would have set the 2009 long for all of FBS football. Can't count this against him.
ND: field goal wasn't going to make a lick of difference and everyone in that stadium other than Grobe knew it. ND had been running at will on us that entire half.
Clemson: field goal would have resulted in the game going to OT..but at the time we were ahead by a TD with almost 2/3 of the 4th to go so not a true clutch situation. This loss goes to Lobo and Grobe for a complete failure to adjust to Clemson's second half defensive adjustments.

Newman missed a makeable kick in that Miami game that would have put the game out of reach in the 4th quarter.

That MSU kick was a clutch kick.

Up 13 with 13 minutes to go? Really stretching the definition of clutch there.

Man that list is a massive indictment of our coaching staff's ability to manage games.

I pretty much knew when he missed that kick that we would lose that game by 1 point.

Jesus Christ, are we still defending Jimmy Newman?

Good for you. Not Jimmy's fault that we did though. Kickers miss kicks. That was not a clutch situation. IIRC..our string of bad luck started after that..it already appeared that we had the game well in hand at that point. Then we fumbled a pump and then Riley got knocked out.

Of course it was a clutch situation. Those points would have been huge.

Are people still criticizing him? He entered his senior year the most accurate kicker in Wake history. Ever. In the history of 100+ years of Wake football, he was the most accurate until his senior year.

No, it simply wasn't. A field goal does not become clutch just because we lost a game by 3 points or less. Given the situation, it was not clutch. Miami had 19 yards of offense in the half at that point.

Miami was ranked. Points in that game were huge. It was a clutch situation. Sorry, you are just wrong.

So every situation is a clutch situation if the team is ranked? Wake was like 90% to win at that point.

To go from 13 to 16 early in the 4th quarter when you are playing a top 20 team? Yeah, that is a clutch situation.

The odds were very good that Miami was going to come back and have a chance to win that game. That's generally what ranked teams do.
