WF @ VT (10/14), 3:30PM on ACC Network

And the new rules don’t do us any favors. I mean it is what it is, but the reality is it probably makes it even harder for us to compete. Players getting money makes sense in some respects, but it also has negative effects.

Wake has always had to struggle to compete. That's why what Clawson has done is so remarkable. He built a consistent winning program at a place where that had never happened before.

Now the question is- can he do it again?

Been a Wake fan for 53 years, so believe I know the struggle to compete. I just hate it seems to get harder and harder. Like I mentioned before, we built some great facilities and that should help to an extent, but with guys being able to leave so easily and get paid, are facilities as important now?

Agreed. All future $$$ needs to support NIL. We have enough buildings. We desperately need players.

My question is why does August camp fail to expose the realities of what we have. Seems to me our defensive line should have exposed our offensive weakness. Yet all we heard was most accurate camp QB ever, and a stable of receivers unmatched in the ACC. None of this was close to reality. How is that possible? I seriously don't get it.

I think it's because you had mediocre talent competing against mediocre talent. I honestly think that's a big part of it. Either that or we have far bigger problems with coaches not correctly evaluating players.

Clawson created his coaching philosophy under a set of rules regarding paying players nit allowed and transfer players had to sit out a year. Those rules allowed him to redshirt most players as freshmen, develop them and have good fourth and fifth year players. That philosophy was enhanced by the Covid year not counting.

It has been upset mightily with the instant eligibility following transfer and the current state of "NIL" "rules." I find NIL an apt description, as it a synonym for zero and none. Effectively there seem to be zero rules on paying players.

Transfer rules with instant eligibility mean guys who have been developed for a few years and are ready to contribute or have started to contribute can transfer and not lose one of their most productive years to a mandatory year of non-participation. That philosophy is severely tested as Sam Hartman, Randell Bothroyd and Gavin Holmes are all playing for "bigger name" schools.

This is an angle I hadn't given much thought. It does make a lot of sense. Guys are going to bounce once they have the chance. We develop them and someone else gets their best years.

I've not given much attention to it but how has Elko been so successful so fast? Success at duke with most of the same academic issues we face but minus the good facilities (their set up and fan support really suck) seems to be an indictment on something about us. Not sure what exactly

Our major problem is the inability to get quality transfers from the portal. We can’t plug holes with portal $$$, and our admissions office wouldn’t admit most guys even if we could. It takes the WF head coaching job from difficult to impossible.

Ehh, blaming this season on NIL seems odd. NIL started in the summer of 2021 and we’ve been ranked in the top 10 the last two years. We were getting votes in the polls just 4 weeks ago before the wheels fell off. We didn’t even try to get a QB in the portal because we thought Mitch would be good.

Our problem this year has obviously been the offense, and the main issue has been QB play. OL and blocking hasn’t been great, but QB play has just been awful since ODU. And, that leads to less confidence from other players and the coaching staff, which leads to simplified and predictable play calling, which makes things even worse.

Serious question: if we’ve won the “facility wars” over 90+% of schools (from everything we’ve seen/heard), why couldn’t we do the same with NIL, assuming boosters are willing to continue paying the same amount of $ (big assumption)?
One time fixed capital cost vs ongoing variable costs every year in perpetuity

In most but certainly not all of Clawson’s “successful” (i.e. bowl) seasons, and the same generally for Dooley and Grobe, we got to 6-8 wins by going 4-0 against a vanilla non-con schedule, then 4-4 or 3-5 in the conference. And absent about 4 seasons of my 40 years of Wake fandom, that’s been our definition of “success”. What Elko has already done to-date by destroying Clemson tops anything we’ve done over that period absent the ACC championship and you could argue the division championship ( which no one outside of Wake, NCSU or Pitt probably remembers). We’re currently in Duke’s rear view mirror; our challenge right now is to just get back to being a consistent bowl-eligible program.

It begins at the QB level and Duke had Cutcliffe. He petered out like Grobe, but he created a foundation that somehow continued.

I see Kern is listed as a redshirt junior. If he's eligible to graduate in May, I wonder if he will even return given the current situation and knowing he's no more of an answer than Griffis. If Kern does move on, that leaves us with Griffis, Gilliam and who else for 2024? Absent the portal, do we have a serviceable QB for next season?

Kern graduated last spring and finishes his master's this semester. I suppose he could get another master's

Jeremy Hecklinski, would be incoming Freshman, unless he bolts after seeing that he’d have to run for his life.

I don’t think we have. Ours might be as good or close, but I don’t think they are better.
