I went through the NCAA stats and added up total points scored and total games over Lobo's tenure at Wake (2003-2012) among all 117 programs that have played over this stretch. Wake has averaged 23.7 points, 90th among all programs.

Here are Wake's scoring stats by year:

To be fair, his offenses were at 78th before this year's 18.5 points (114th).

These are the teams at #85-#99 over this stretch. They averaged between 23.0 and 24.0 PPG.

Boston College
Indiana
Middle Tenn. St.
Maryland
SMU
Wake Forest
La.-Monroe
Utah St.
Washington
Washington St.
Virginia
Kent St.
Akron
Illinois

Wake did not average over 28 points a game in any year and has not done so under Grobe. Only the following teams did not average 28 points in a single season between 2003-2012.

Wake Forest
North Texas
Colorado
Wyoming
UNLV
Army

Does that scoring figure include defensive scoring as well as offensive? Because from 2006-2008 our defense + special teams sometimes outscored our offense in some games, or at least contributed a lot to our scoring.

Yes. That's why 2007 is so high. We had 10 D/ST TDs that year.

I'm not giving it to him. This is just simpler. 90 makes the point anyway.

After 2 games against the worst non-con team on our schedule and worst ACC team on our schedule (fewest votes in the ACC preseason poll), we're averaging 20.5 ppg.

By comparison, our 3-9 2010 team scored 53 and 54 points against Presby and a Duke team that finished 3-9 (1-7).

Clemson and F$U could drop 100 on us if they wanted.

Can't wait to see our new "top secret" running attack against FSU. I will be shocked it we end up with positive running yards in that game.

We couldn't even get positive yards against our own defense.

I'm asking this here since PH and I have discussed this a few times going back to late 90s. How many opposing players have set career or team records in football games against WF? That BC back last night had a career best 200+.

Good question. Hard to answer.

We are the cure for what ails any RB. Drives me crazy.

Probalbly as many as opposing basketball players have hit their career high against us on the hardcourt. Funny this is, Williams having a career night last night wasn't even close to biggest reason we lost. Turnovers and complete ineptitude from running an offense that is a complete disaster far outweighed giving up a career high to Williams.

2013 stats

#98t in scoring offense (20 ppg)
#104 in total offense
#56 in passing offense
#112 in rushing offense (only 17 teams under 100 ypg)
#102 in 3rd down conversion percentage (30%)
#121 in red zone percentage (56%)

Agreed, but again I think our defense this year is actually pretty good (at least personnel-wise). I think a large number of issues stem from the obsession with the zone defense and the fact that they're on the field so much because the offense is going three and out at a rate above 50% of all possessions.

You definitely see flashes from the defense, but, like most everything Grobe does, it's hampered by excessive conservatism.

Just accounting for games against other FBS schools, Wake is the 21st worst team in TOP but still ranks 36th in scoring defense, 39th in total defense, 57th in passing defense, and 48th in rushing defense. When you put the FCS games back in Wake is even better: 28th in scoring defense, 17th in total defense, 18th in passing defense, and 46th in rushing defense.

That's a pretty solid defense so far, although granted the three games have all been against sub-par teams.

The next two weeks will tell us a lot about the defense, but we know enough about the offense to know major changes must be made at the top.
