ESPN: Danny Manning considered for WFU job, meets with Wellman 3/31/14

MY Final 5 of that group would be:

Marshall
Bennett
Donovan
Underwood
Wright

Let's be real for a second -- Danny Manning is no one's top choice, but at least unlike BZD the story of his head coaching career has yet to be written. He may come in and be totally over his head. No doubt, I don't think anyone disputes this. And we'd all have preferred other candidates who apparently Wellman preferred and pursued as well, unsuccessfully.

To the extent people are "talking themselves into Manning," it's based on the idea that he may come in, get a couple of good recruits, exceed expectations with a veteran team the next couple of years, and return us to a good place. I don't think we have any idea what his ceiling is. It's like drafting the latest Cuban dude in your fantasy baseball league.

Personally, if he's hired, I'll support him because he seems like a good dude, he clearly does not have Asperger's, and there is at least the POSSIBILITY he might be successful.

Manning is up for National Coach of the year. A lot of the guys on that list are people we should be seriously looking at, shouldn't we? I don't remember Bz being on such a list but maybe he was while at Air Force.

The finalists for the Jim Phelan Award include Steve Alford (UCLA), Rick Barnes (Texas), John Beilein (Michigan), Tony Bennett (Virginia), Ed Cooley (Providence), Billy Donovan (Florida), Steve Fisher (San Diego State), Danny Manning (Tulsa), Gregg Marshall (Wichita State), Sean Miller (Arizona), Greg McDermott (Creighton), Tim Miles (Nebraska), Craig Neal (New Mexico), Brad Underwood (Stephen F. Austin), and Jay Wright (Villanova).

I don't see Levelle Moton or shady Italian dude who lied about graduating from college on that list!!!!!

FWIW, I rate White and Manning about the same. You're splitting hairs if you're differentiating them. I prefer them to guys like Amaker and Mack, but that's just because Mack rubs me the wrong way. Mack is the more solid hire, but I see White and Manning as having higher ceilings. And lower floors.

A few insiders posted that Wellman informed Bz 2-4 weeks before the season ended that he'd be gone. If that's the case then Wellman has had almost a full six weeks to target and lock up a new coach.

Dont forget the bang up job he did leading the tournament selection committee. fiddling while rome burns.

The stench of Bz is having long term ramifications on the appeal of WFU...That fucker blew us up
So you're going to get upset because ONE dude on there said that? Really? A few others are pretty much refuting his view too.

remind me why we give a crap about KU fan's opinion of Wake Forest or any fan base's opinion of Wake Forest?

i really think some folks on here are giving way to much credence to other people's opinion and i think "national perception" of Wake is way overblown.

No doubt we struggled for the past 4 years - but i am sending positive vibes that Ron WILL get the right coach in here

I don't know if Manning is the answer or not but he clearly knows basketball, has won everywhere he has been including Page High School and has been around some elite college coaches for a number of years. Plus he has enjoyed some success at Tulsa in a short amount of time......

One dude? I didn't see much agreement that Wake is a good job.

Don't know if this has been posted in the GIANT THREAD (I'm sure it has), but here's the Tulsa World story where Manning confirms Wake's interest: http://m.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra...e7606c84fc.html?mode=jqm#.UzrE_fxgbng.twitter

Also says he's setting up a meeting with the Tulsa President "to discuss a new contract for Manning and salary increases for his assistant coaches," so this could just be a false alarm for Manning to get more money at Tulsa.

It's just that many people think Wake is a low-end ACC job (which, let's be honest, it is right now) and your career can go to die at these types of jobs. Now with Tulsa in the AAC next year, it might make sense to make the jump before you struggle in a better conference, but the point remains that young up-and-comers might not jump at the opportunity (even with the $$) to struggle at the next level when they can improve their resumes on the mid-major level before getting a more attractive job.

After Dino's comments the other day, I think this has always been considered a tough job. Historical competitiveness aside, coaches look at this job and think, small school, tough academics, recruiting restrictions, serious competition in the neighborhood/conference, tough gig. Yeah, coaches have big ego's, but no one wants to fight an uphill battle.

Yeah, but it's been shown you can win in men's basketball at Wake. It's certainly not anywhere near the uphill battle in hoops at Wake as it is in football.

Agreed; Wake is not the easiest basketball job around, but it's one with a very high ceiling and as many institutional advantages as it has limitations -- i.e., for every 'recruiting restriction' or 'academic rigor' in the CON column, there's a 'Miller Center' or 'NBA brand' in the PRO column.
