New MTOW: How the Danny Manning Deal Went Down

So who would you have hired, given that choices A-F apparently declined? Would you rather have a worse coach with less money? Buy cheap buy twice. 2.4 mm is essentially 40 tuition payments If he sucks as a coach, a few hundred thousand $$$ is the least of our problems

Not the point. He's not saying Wellman should have gotten a "cheaper" coach. The point is that if Wellman weren't such a donk, then he would have been able to sign someone with Manning's resume for a lot less.

lol at the camera panning over the GIS results for danny manning.

See thread premise. (whoops, wasn't the thread I thought it was)

There's very little certainty that Manning is a better coach than an elite top assistant (two years ago that was all he was). If the numbers are true, we paid over $1M extra for that marginal increase in certainty. That would be a mistake.

I just hope we provide Danny with the resources he needs to have as good of a chance as possible at success. I worry that we won't if we truly paid him that much.

We didn't have a choice. This job is not what it used to be and when are some of you idiots going to realize this.

If Manning says no, we could end up with someone like Mike Young from Wofford (3 tourney appearances in 5 years) and then you'd really scream bloody murder.

Sigh.

Love it when someone completely fails at reading and then calls me an idiot.

We would have saved seven figures if we had hired an elite top assistant. In my mind, because Danny's brief tenure at Tulsa that doesn't blow me away, an elite top assistant would be only marginally more risky. Less risky if you think about what that $1M+ could be spent on. A bigger assistant budget, a bigger recruiting budget (I wonder how many hours worth of Net Jet that buys...a bunch I bet), better facilities, etc.

I really, really like the idea of Danny at $1.2-1.6M but, I definitely worry about potentially sinking $2.0-2.4M into someone as risky as him. And, yes, he's definitely risky.

Wake needs to be able to recruit. The name "Danny Manning" is going to get the attention of a lot of D-1 prospects. Most of those million-dollar-less-assistants won't.

I'll agree that Manning wasn't a bargain if what's being reported is true. Looking back, it shows what a cheap date [Redacted] turned out to be. However, I think RW knows the extra $$ won't be a problem now that [Redacted] is gone, as more fans will come out to support the basketball team and the new coach. Hell with the bullshit attendance numbers floated last season, we'll have the highest attendance numbers in the ACC, and possibly the entire NCAA.

I just don't buy that, especially since the million-dollar-less-assistants I'm talking about have a track record of recruiting elite guys, while Danny doesn't. Danny has been either on the end of a NBA bench or on a collegiate bench as a coach for pretty much the entirety of the lives of the kids we are recruiting. And, at Kansas, it seems he didn't have significant recruiting duties.

So next time wake needs to make a coaching hire, we need to make sure it blows you away to make it worth it?

Guys, I don't mean to be negative or anything here, I just worry about our ability to pay such a large salary and provide the required resources to best position a pretty inexperienced guy for success.

Once the rest of the bench is named it may turn out my concerns are completely unwarranted.

They never would have offered what they couldn't afford.

I'm sure we can afford $2.4M. I am not sure we can afford to also significantly increase the assistant budget and the recruiting budget.

He didn't recruit elite guys at Kansas?

What if the rumored $2.4M includes his assistants? Doesn't that make more sense? $1.5M for Manning and he figures out what to do with the $900K or whatever? I have a hard time believing Manning's base salary more than doubled at 3am this morning.

i have a hard time with the appeal to authority after the bzzaster. if this hire had been made pre-bzzzzzzz i would have had a ton more faith in it. i'm still excited because the long national nightmare is over, and it's time to move on.

That would be perfect.

We must have been typing at the same time as I didn't see the post. We have just wasted over 5 mil on a POS coach. What's another million for a name coach no matter who he is.

I don't care how old Manning is and whether todays recruits recognize him or not. He played 15 years in the league. If we take top assistant "A" (say Mike Hopkins from the Cuse) at 1 mil a year, you think he's gonna have a better chance at a top recruit than Manning? If so you're insane and you're being LOWF for bitching about what something cost.

IMO, the salary is a combination of what we want to pay now and what we might want to pay later. Top coaches don't want to come here. We need to begin rehabbing that perception now, and that means appearing that we're willing to put up big-time resources.

My views on the AD's competence and the risk of hiring Manning in general are well documented, so I won't get into that.
