NBA Off-season thread: Duncan and Garnett retire

Hinkie was brought in with a specific plan, to have a bad team for a few years, acquire high draft choices and totally rebuild the team. At some point the ownership decided to change direction on that, and brought in Colanelo Sr to run things. Jerry Colangelo then pushed Hinkie to the side to give his basically unemployed son a job. Don't think Sixers ownership expected to see Brian Colangelo running things.

The league certainly meddled too.

I'll also go on record, and risk getting us full blown back into the Ish Smith argument, that the Sixers made a wise choice not to re-sign Ish at 3/$18 or higher.

"Snookered" into firing Hinkie? How do you get "snookered" into firing the least successful GM (who lasted multiple seasons) in NBA history?

Least successful is nonsense. Pure nonsense. Two words: Billy King.

Success for Hinkie was never going to be defined by short term win percentage. It was all about competing for a championship in the long term. Impossible to know if he would have turned 76ers into a contender because ownership didn't keep their side of the bargain.

With the new CBA coming, $6M/year for two years after this year is a good deal for a solid back-up PG who is a leader and has cache with your team. He's a solid insurance policy if they can't find a good draft choice to be the PG of the future.

Unless something radical happens, no top tier PG would sign with the Sixers.

He'd be the starter in Philly, I suspect. He's better than TJ McConnell or Sergio. Still think they're punting on PG til the draft next year. It's still a rebuild, and there's no reason to spend extra once you've met the salary floor. They're not trying to make the playoffs this year.

Unless they make good trades, Hinkie's drafting of all the same players will not produce a playoff teams, much less a championship anytime soon. Why would trade value to a desperate and failing franchise?

His concept also guaranteed that no decent FA would come to Philly for years to come.

Your position made sense 3-4 years ago. With the cap going over $100M soon, $6M for a solid back-up, fan favorite, experienced, great team guy is a bargain.

By the way for 17-18 and 18-19, the Sixers are grossly under the salary floor. Given that signing a top FA for either of those years is a tremendous stretch (at best), singing Ish would have been a wise decision.

I wouldn't say fan favorite.

And the Sixers are going to look very, very different this time next year.

Of course he was going to have to make some trades. And I agree he didn't pick as well as he could have in the draft to maximize their ability to make trades. But, certainly not least successful. Again, Billy King was given a blank check and told to build a contender roster as quickly as possible. The result was a single playoff series win and zero assets for the future.

FWIW, the MCW for the Laker's pick trade was a complete heist.

Glad MCW is gone. Kinda wish we still had Jrue. But the Sixers haven't had very good luck at the PG position since AI.

Townie's Ish hatred is bordering on hostile.

He's becoming PH II. For four years PH said Ish wasn't an ACC quality player.

Townie, why would a good FA come to the Sixers and pray they make the playoffs? That's the only way the Sixers become competitive. If the Sixers sign a FA, it will be overpaying for a Tier 2 or Tier 3 player.

They may "look" different next year and the year after, but it will likely only be different mediocre faces.

I like Ish a lot as a human and less, but still a lot as a fan of a team who he has played professionally for.

Attracting free agents to Philly is still going to take a couple or a few years. I suspect getting to play with a generational talent like Embiid will help. The New Orleans model is a decent comparison.

The Sixers have nothing but devalued pieces to trade. Why give a team equal or greater value for a player they have to move?

Hopefully the Lakers will not be in the Top 3 this year.

There's also a big question, if the Sixers get to draft Dennis Smith, what do they do with Ben Simmons. Saric is good shooter. He can play with Smith. Simmons needs the ball to be effective.

By then, Ish's contract would be up.

Okafor has to have a good year to get value for him. If he sulks, his value will drop.

Noel needs to be in a package get much more than a journeyman or low lottery pick. They need to move him now to get more.

Right, so what difference does it make? He adds maybe two wins over the current set of guys. Generously.

He's much better than any PG they have and can help the young guys. It's a no lose situation.
