Stand back, there's a hurricane coming: vs. Miami tonight

yeah i guess that was vague, sorry. most wake points in an ACC regulation game in 12 years.

what if i told you before the season that we'd climb 40 kenpom spots from the preseason projection by mid january?

i know why it's the case, but interesting how generally miserable the fanbase with the team and coach despite this. most people didn't think we'd be good this year anyway. and we still aren't really, but we're closer than we have been in ages.

This game is the positive of the John Collins is the key to this season. He played a decent amount of minutes and scored a whole bunch of points. His play was key to destroying the "great" Miami defense. The same one that held Pitt to 46 gave up more than that in each half to Wake.

Just got home. Enjoyable night at the Joel. Tonight underscored just how important it is to keep Collins out of foul trouble and on the floor. My perception was that every run they made in the second half came when JC was on the bench. He'd come back in, and order would be shortly restored.

Good games for Woods and Crawford tonight as well. When Crawford plays under control and makes good decisions, he's dynamite.

It is pretty clear what our weaknesses are. We lack quality depth and elite athleticism. However, we have some winnable road games on the schedule--if we can ever get over the hump and finally win one, this team has the ability to accomplish some nice things.

I liked in the post game radio interview with Stan that Collins said he wants to get a road win against NCSU on Saturday for Manning. Seeing as how we haven't won there since 2005, that would be OK by me.

Our old friend Rodney Miller, who I was convinced was going to be a Deacon, scored 1 point in 1 minute of PT tonight. He appears to be a project to say the least.

3 of our 4 conference losses are to the top 4 ACC(none of whom we play again!) and top 16 National teams, 3 other of our 7 total losses are to #1 Nova, #22 X and #29 NW. This team has taken its licks, blown leads and frustrated many of us with its youth but they can get us back to the promised land. Support them and you will recover from our 4 years of painful BZ scars.

Nice win against a pretty decent team still not convinced Manning is the guy but you have to give credit where it is due. Sitting at the game the people around me were questioning (loudly I might add) why he kept Collins out as much as he did but otherwise everyone was pleased with the effort of the kids.

If this team matures another offseason, brings in Chaundee to fill Arian's role and doesn't lose any of the core (BC, JC, KW), they are a tournament team easily next year.

You just get the feeling that JC gets his fouling issues under control, BC plays a bit smarter, lil Chill takes a step forward, Doral gives you a tough 10 minutes, and Chaundee and KW find ways to put the ball in the basket. One of the wing frosh from this year needs to find a way to get onto the court next year to help with depth.

Beat a top 25 team and then we'll talk. Until then I'm going to wallow in the seven years of suckitude, which are all exactly the same, no difference or improvement whatsoever. This was just a lucky aberration, like [Redacted] beating Duke and Miami. No person or computer could have predicted this. #Bzdelik2.0 :plos:

I'd like to thank the big mouth in Section 109 who personally screamed at and called out Crawford as he came off the court following a turnover. Thanks as well to the olds behind me who spent the entire second half instructing everyone in the section on how to break the press.

Are you talk about the lady? I think she was heartfelt and not being sarcastic in her cheer, but it was hard to tell at first.

Olds in 108 just dropped nuggets of wisdom like "don't leave the guy who shoots threes open." Although there was an older lady who was incredulous that McClinton played as much as he did.

You think so? Seemed like sarcasm to me, but perhaps I was wrong.

Last night was a very good performance. Came out strong to start both halves, responded well whenever Miami made a run. The thing that still bothers me is letting teams get back into the game. I know that basketball is a game of runs and I know that you rarely can dominate a team that is fairly even with you for 40 minutes, but we were up 20+ points in the 2nd half and I think they got to within 6. I know that's going to happen sometimes, but with us it seems to happen about everytime, LSU being the one exception this year. Just wish when we get up 20+ points like that, the other team's "run" would only cut it to 12 or so instead of 6 points with enough time remaining that we could've lost. All that said, we had to have that game last night and after a week off the team responded really well and it looked like Danny and the staff did some good work since the UNC game.

I was a bit surprised by how effective Miami's press was against us. I don't think we've faced that much pressure before, but generally speaking, it seems like we've handled it better than we did last night. I love the fact that we battled back and pulled away. I told my wife on the way out that I don't ever remember such a "close" 17 point win, but I'm encouraged by our performance and how so many guys stepped up last night. Let's get one in Raleigh.

I know it feels that way, and especially recently (in ACC play), but we have 9 double-digit wins this year, and 7 of those are by 15+ points.

It is usually going to get relatively even when two teams like Wake/Miami are playing just because they are roughly equivalent as far as teams go. Last night was a good test for us and I'm glad that we responded like we did.

It seems like we know how to break the press (meaning, the guys are where they need to be and know where the ball needs to go), it's just an execution issue where guys get flustered and panicked. It was interesting to see the press in front of me last night because we ran the same play nearly every single time. The guards take their time before they dribble into a corner, and they prefer passing to dribbling out of the DT (unless it's Chill). That, to me, shows that we are a pretty well coached team in that regard, and with more preparation and practice will become very effective at breaking the press moving forward.
