Childress new Assistant Basketball coach (Corbean gone)

I'm going to throw out a crazy idea here - Bz should hire Sheila Kelly.

I would be completed embarrassed as a Wake alum and fan if we went to the Final 4 and then ended up vacating the wins or on probation.

I would too. So feel free to name some of the NCAA violations we were committing under Prosser/Dino.

The good news is that Chill will always have a job at Wake with the basketball program, AD, Deacon Club, or wherever, so it's not like he'll be unemployed when [Redacted] takes the gig in the Australian women's professional basketball league. Probably the same holds true for Rusty. They'll be fine.

I appreciate Rusty and Randolph's contributions as players but they get very little special considerations from me when talking about coaching. They chose to come back here and they are supporting this atrocious product being put on the floor (especially when considering that WF has good enough players to be at least a middle team in the ACC). They were not forced to endure this awful coach and they chose to become the navigator and assistant captain on the SMS Buzz-tanic. So when it sinks they either go down with the ship totally or get saved and go somewhere else to coach. Neither have proven they can truly coach that well at the D-1 level and truthfully probably should not have been hired except for sentimental reasons.

More RW nepotism and Corbean gets the pink slip now. Granted, we all love Chill, but another bad move just to put lipstick on a pig.

He would have been just as gone as Director of Player Development. At least he gets to say he was an AC this year.

There is a massive difference between Childress' made up role (what he served last year) and being an official D1 assistant. Most high major staffs have multiple made up roles (these positions are growing on trees lately). To be made an assistant means you are part of the core team. Childress could have absolutely survived a cleaning as the DPD (or whatever other made up title they might give him). And here is the reality of what him choosing to accept this decision does. When I was in my second year of coaching our school moved up from D2 to D1. Along with it came a lot of turnover with our staff. I had the opportunity to move to another school as an assistant or continue on where I was. When spoke to other coach who was interested in hiring me he told me the following words "I would love for you to come, but understand that we are on the razor's edge down here. We might not be here for the long haul". When you become a part of the AC staff you are tying yourself to the head coach. I was fortunate enough to have a coach that would level with me. Turns out he was fired after that year, and went on to take an AC job at an ACC school the following year, but his staff was sent scrambling for jobs.

Childress was not tied to Bz before now. He wasn't hired by Bz, and he could survive the firing of Bz. By accepting the AC spot he is a part of Bz's coaching tree, for better or for worse. In my opinion it will not be a benefit to him.

Why would anyone care if any coach on the current staff were fired? The whole staff is a giant bag of fail at the moment. Nobody is a scapegoat - they are all well-deserving.
I don't get that either. The 98%ers are getting their panties up in a wad over Rusty and Chill being "manipulated" by Wellman and Bz into being "human shields" for the program. If that is what is going on and Rusty and Chill are that stupid, then why would the 98%ers want them as coaches and thus care about this?? Same with Battle. They created the "dumpster fire" too.

To think this is a PR move is also pretty funny to me. When has Wellman cared about fan PR?? He simply keeps repeating...winning will cure those problems....because he's a true believer.

My guess is Bz wants Chill to be a more active part of the program because he's having a good influence on the players he interacts with, but that's too obvious an explanation.

I care. I think it's ludicrous for anyone to be fired for performance reasons when the guy responsible for it all is not held to any standards whatsoever.

Chill still has the same chance of being kept after next year as he did as DPD. He is in a unique position that you weren't. He's a legend at the school and he has a lot of pro experience around the world.

In a side note, according to the old board Battle was in the mix for Associate Head Coach at Butler after Graves moved to UAB. He could have been the guy who helped Stevens recruit a level of players Butler isn't used to getting now that they are in a high major conference.

I DON'T want Rusty or Chill as coaches. I think they are unproven and only have their positions on the bench of an ACC program because of Wellman's desire to shield himself. Until they are proven, very little positive can come from their hiring because there's a good chance they'll have to be fired. You can't compare them to Battle. They are alumni and legends. When offered a job at their alma mater, it becomes much harder to say no and think of it as just a decision of what's best for them and their career. Hell, if you do want to compare them to Battle, keep in mind that he almost jumped ship for a downgraded job but ended up staying so he wouldn't have to uproot his son. I don't believe Battle is sitting on the bench enduring this crap because he 100% supports [Redacted]...he's sitting on the bench because he has emotional ties to this place and because the right job at the right time hasn't come along yet.

I definitely see this as a PR move like all the other "Oh Heavens Yes!" moments RW's thrown out to quell the restless fans. Maybe it will turn out well (when not much else has.) Chill MAY have a positive impact in this role, BUT the bottom line? We still have bzz.

RW is doing an AWFUL job...and not just with basketball. In how many sports are we currently fielding a competitive team (must less historically competitive)?

More AD propaganda? Have the insideres over here heard the same or was this something fed to Deman?

The question is what will best prop up Bzz. RC has more to offer. Everyone is expendable except the HC.

Of course. Apparently the AD doesn't think Wake fans are rational enough to believe this.

Fact is, if we ever hired a real coach, that guy would want to bring his OWN staff, not one that RW has welded together to pander to the audience. Not saying it's never happened, but I've never heard of a Div.I coach who let the AD determine his staff. Bzzz is a bit of a puppet, no?

Rusty was hired under Dino so it makes very little sense he got his job to be a human Bz shield doesn't it? IMO Chill probably got promoted because of his proven abilities with individual players. Just be glad he's around so that when they improve, you'll have someone to give credit to other than Bz.

Bz is being held to Wellman's standards and Wellman is being held to the BOT/big donor standards...with some slack for previous achievment apparently. Who is not being held to a set of standards? They might not be your standards, but they are being held to standards of some sort.

They don't count as standards if they are this low.
