Official OGBoards Golf Thread

I've played out there a few times over the years. Never been a big fan of the layout, or the cost to play out there when there are nicer courses in the area that can be played for less. I did play out there back in June when I found a deal online to play for $19 after 11am. I will say it was in the best shape I've seen it back in June..

What don't you like about the layout? I'm just a guest in a golf outing, so I didn't have any input nor do I know anything about courses in that area.

I'm the last person who should be commenting on new equipment since I still have original Callaway Warbird fairway woods, but depending on how old your driver is, that may be worth the upgrade. Finding a driver you can hit consistently for decent distance means more short irons from the fairway - you won't need the hybrid (theoretically).

Old putters are fine if you're comfortable with it.

Good point. I tried the Rocket Ballz out and really liked the way it feels. I have a Taylor Made R4 so technology has surely changed for the better since I bought that. I tend to think when I play more it will matter what I use. FWIW I have an S2H2 Callaway fairway wood so I got your Warbird beat in terms of age :)

Until a few months ago when I bought a used Burner 2.0, I was still swinging a Zevo driver I had fitted to me in 1997. I only play a couple times a year these days, but when I swung a buddy's POS off-brand driver and put it 20 yards in front of my old Zevo, I figured it was time to upgrade.

Then again, I'm the guy that still plays Mizuno Grads, including 3-5 irons, a blade 1 iron, and an old Warbird 4+ wood as my only fairway wood. I could probably benefit by updating the technology in my bag.

Being sent out by my company to Monterey next week and I'm getting the opportunity to play Pebble. Anyone got any recommendations? We'll of course be doing it the right way, using our own clubs and walking with a caddy.

What kind of golfer are you? Anything over 15 and you need to really pay attention to where you miss on approach shots, chipping from the rough there is brutal. If you are in the rough and over 160 away consider laying up and giving yourself an easy pitch up. I've played there twice and both times watched mediocre to bad golfers lose their minds playing from the rough.

If you are better than that I think it's a course where you have to trust your driver off the tee and get as far down there as you can. The fairways are bigger than they look from the tee.

Currently a 13 handicap, and shot a 79 (first time breaking 80) a few weeks back.

I normally aim for 6500 yards on a course but we've got to play from the blue, right?

BLACK (US Open): Rating 75.5 / Slope 145 / 7040 yards
BLUE: Rating 74.7 / Slope 143 / 6828 yards
GOLD: Rating 72.6 / Slope 136 / 6445 yards

And I'm assuming I'm going to get destroyed by the traps, right? Without a doubt the weakest part of my game and when playing for my misses, I do everything possible to avoid them.

Weird to me someone with a 13 handicap would have just broken 80 for the first time. Then again I think I have a weird history where my best round is a 74 and my 2nd best round I think is like an 83. Grandview FTMFW.

Think two years back I had a streak of 15+ rounds where I shot between an 80 and 90. I have a pretty strong short game, but I always struggled with hitting the greens with mid and long irons. Thus, I would pretty consistently get bogeys on any hole where I don't hit a good drive or the distance is 420+ (or 160+ for par 3s). Throw in maybe one bad hole and that's mid 80s all day.

Game has changed over the past month or so though where I've picked up about a club length of distance with my irons, with my shot straightening out and losing a significant amount of the slice it used to have.

9: 130 to 140
8: 145 to 155
7: 155 to 165
6: 165 to 180
5: 180 to 195
Hybrid: 200 to 215

Not even sure why I still carry my 3 and 5 wood as they provide minimal benefit other than showing off my Demon Deacon head covers.

Played at The Virginian this week. Really nice Tom Fazio course near me. Top 5 VA course. I had some great holes mixed in with some real stinkers. Zoysia fairways rock.
I just got the R1. I either hit it 310 and straight or drop kick a hook about 180. Hard to know which will happen. My game is flashes of brilliance interspersed with beginner shots. Maddening. But trying to play more which I hope will help.

Picture below is from the Virginian. Little starter home. Haha

Leave for Ireland in a week.

Going to be around the south-west with a bunch of good courses.

Adare, Old Head, Waterville, Ballybunion, Lahinch, Doonbeg.

Any ideas on places to visit when not golfing or drunk in a pub?

Bringing a shit ton of rain gear and 2 pairs of shoes. Any other suggestions to bring other than a golf game?

Before the R1, how far were you hitting it?

I've always hit the ball a long way (im 6'3" and 220) Maybe 290 or so with the occasional 300+ with my old stick. Easier to hit a bomb with the R1 but hard to cut/draw the ball much. Which isn't the worst thing but can be helpful on some holes. I just need to figure out why my miss is a drop kick hook. It's hard to play for that.

ewwwww ewwww ewwwww

that'll be because you're trying to hit it 310 instead of 300 in the middle, dropping your head and moving your arms faster than your body is rotating.

Slow your arms down. That always helps when i'm snap hooking it. Don't know what to really tell you about the drop kick though

Nonny, I'd recommend playing from the golds. 74.7/143 is really tough. Don't ruin your experience by playing from tees you shouldn't be just because its pebble (my opinion only, but it's what we followed at kiawah)

I don't feel like I'm jumping at the ball but I certainly could be. I used to play a fade and my miss was a slice. I'm always scared to hang back and slow the arms because I'm afraid ill get stuck behind the ball and push/slice the ball. I'm wondering if my ball position is leading to the drop kick. Maddening game sometimes. But I love it

Saw a fucking horrific car accident after playing golf today. Shelby Cobra on fire with two dead bodies. Never seen anything like that before.

and I thought I had some legacy clubs playing 2006 Big Bertha irons
