2007 - Greatest Modern Year in Film

I'm very biased in these discussions about objective "best" because TWBB is one of my favorite films of all time. I literally made the claim on the chat thread last night before this thread was even posted that it's my favorite film since 2000. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is probably the film closest for me.

A thread cataloging people's top ten films since 2000 would be very interesting. 2 movies from 2007 would likely make my list, TWBB and Assassination of Jesse James.

if it's ok with the OP, i wouldn't mind doing it here. it might help in getting a sort of power rankings of what a larger group of people favor over that time period. i had one a couple years ago that i need to find and completely re-do.

That they are not still damn good movies? Or that they're not particularly better than the top award nominees in any given year? It's my belief that you could go through nearly every year in the last 15 years and find 2 or 3 comparably great films. I don't think TWBB and NCFOM set 2007 apart, as a year in film.

So what 2 great movies from 2012 would you pit against TWBB and NCFOM? 2010?

ETA: Sorry this should have read 2011 and 2009. But I really don't think there has been a year since 2007 with 2 comparable films.

cool with me as long as we continue to geek out over 07.

If you have to use Shawshank as part of the argument for 94 over 2007, that's a losing battle.

I can understand not going back to the 30s-50s, but there are tons of movies in the 60s-80s that are better that what's made today. Cinematic tricks and computers do not trump solid storytelling and acting.

lol at this comment when there was no shortage of the latter in 2007. Affleck's performances in Gone Baby Gone and Assassination of JJ, Tommy Lee Jones in No Country, DDL. The storytelling in Michael Clayton is phenomenal. etc.

Not to mention there are plenty of filmmakers today that are far more interested in trying to emulate or play off of older genres, methods, and periods in film and not focused on using bells and whistles. Tarantino, the Coen Brothers, Aranofsky, plenty more. Classic, lazy "in my day" statement.

There were better eras in film, but don't blame technology for the decline.

You think 3:10 to Yuma or American Gangster are better?

Those aren't necessarily better, although I prefer them, but Shawshank is usually cited as one of the best movies from that year. And I think it sucks quite frankly.

I hate leaving out The Departed, No Country for Old Men, Memento, Royal Tenenbaums, and Assassination of Jesse James.

Good call on Children of Men. It will probably take me some time to finish my list, but as a warning, it might have Hustle and Flow on it. Will definitely have In Bruges, and Assassination of JJ on it.

Session 9? It's a cool story, but the acting suuuuucks. It's like David Caruso can't break character from Horatio.

I don't think I said it was one of the best movies of the year, I just added it in my argument (the same way you did with some mediocre movies).

I hear you. My Shawshank statement wasn't directed toward you as much as the general 1994 argument you hear/see.

I have seen like 4 of those - maybe 4.5.

I have seen zero of those.

I have seen NCFOM (LOVE it) and Royal Tenenbaums (really liked it).

In my defense, my wife hates movies - hates as in will not go to the movies and will not sit down and watch one at home. If we are at a beach house or a lake house with a group of people and they want to watch a movie, she might watch it - and she usually enjoys it, as I try to remind her... but it doesn't help... She's like nope, nope, nope...

Rescue Dawn is the only film in the OP I haven't seen. The Aviator for mdmh's list. Think I've seen everything else on this thread.

I know I probably missed some, but here's what I came up with. I included the year, just cause it seemed to fit with this thread.

10. George Washington (2000)
9. Miami Vice (2006)
8. The Assassination of Jesse James (2007)
7. Dogtooth (2010)
6. Wolf Creek (2005)
5. Memories of Murder (2003)
4. In the Mood for Love (2001)
3. There Will Be Blood (2007)
2. Mulholland Drive (2001)
1. The Tree of Life (2011)

Just missed the cut (in order): Inglourious Basterds (2009), Yi Yi (2000), The Dark Knight (2008), Pulse (Kairo) (2005), The New World (2005), Rachel Getting Married (2008), Bad Education (2004), Femme Fatale (2002), Zodiac (2007), The Darjeeling Limited (2007), Drive (2011), Inception (2010), Mystic River (2003), Exiled (2007), Blue Valentine (2010), Two Lovers (2009), Audition (2001), Piranha 3D (2010)

Shiiiiiiit I love Wolf Creek. Also Half Nelson was a near miss for me. I love everything about that movie.
