The Charlotte Hornets are Coming Home.

Clifford is the same age as JVG (51), and only two years younger than SVG (53). This sounds like someone trying to pitch [Redacted].

Nonsense. Clifford was a hot coaching prospect ([Redacted]?), the Bobcats don't need another celebrity coach to appease at this point in their roster development (Brown), and the VG guys weren't looking to rebuild a team at this point in their careers (it's like wondering why the Bobcats didn't hire Phil Jackson). It's a smart hire.

Thanks for the correction on the deal.

For anybody in the Charlotte area today, there's a big party going on downtown from noon until 9 PM to celebrate the Board of Governors voting to approve the name change. Muggsy will be there hanging out, Kendall Gill, Dell Curry, Rex Chapman, and others. Live music, free shit, and they're going to make the official BOG approval announcement as soon as they get word from the NBA about 8:30 tonight. Should be a fun time.

Stern also said that, so far, Charlotte is currently leading the league in season ticket sales this summer. That's nuts, and really exciting for Charlotte. The hive will be alive.

It's an exciting time to be a Charlotte basketball fan. (Did I just type that?) The on-floor product has actual direction now, and the off-the-court branding is starting to really take off.

The Observer said today that the rebrand begins IMMEDIATELY.

The NBA team in Charlotte will finally get the old Hornets name back – and with it comes a new business model.....

The team will kick off a “Buzz City” themed, purple-tinged media blitz Sunday on billboards, newspapers, radio and the Internet. A web video that goes with it is heavy on civic pride and heritage, with the old logo and an old Muggsy Bogues jersey making appearances.

One billboard-style ad proclaims simply: “Honey…I’m Home.”.....

Retro Hornets merchandise will be up for sale almost immediately. The new logo, colors, uniforms and the new dance team will follow soon....

But how will you sell a Cody Zeller Bobcats jersey to those ticketholders when the name’s going away?

Answer: They won’t. At least, that won’t be the focus.

Just look at the t-shirts from above - looks like Carolina Blue and Purple instead of the teal.

I don't think that's all too unexpected. It is Jordan, after all. I can live with that (though I would prefer teal) to see the Buzz return.

I believe (possibly foolishly) that this rebrand will help the on-court product as well. There a
Should be a LOT more people going to games. Players can feed off that energy. I think they can find that extra gear with an actual crowd to play for.

I agree...the crowds should become better (which wouldn't take much) and that'll hopefully fuel the players like some of the great homecourts in the NBA do.

Also, there was a story on NBA.com that said because of NOLA's cooperation with the nickname transition, the Horncats franchise is going to make a donation to their Pelicans Gulf Coast Preservation Fund. Pretty classy move.

"Honey, I'm home" is so simple, yet such a good billboard.

Going away from purple and teal would be a big mistake. Hopefully that doesn't happen.

I really like it too. It's weird that this franchise spent a decade as the worst marketed team in the NBA, but they're doing a really great job with this Hornets stuff. Maybe they hired some new people.

That is completely insane.

I've said this before, but now that it is official, I hope they hire some people to attempt to replicate the in-game experience from the Charlotte Coliseum as well. Hell, they could hire me as a consultant:

Hire James K. Flynn
Buzzing sound effect all the time
Get Bojangles to sponsor basically everything in the whole arena
Intro music

Music to be played at opportune times late in the game

http://www.artistdirect.com/video/gary-glitter-rock-and-roll-part-2-the-hey-song/48175
Recreate those fake "noise" meters with the Hugo logos for the kids
See if that fat guy who did backflips is still alive and agile enough
Those same movie clip montages during late game situations
Hugo blimp, t-shirt cannon, Honeybees

Since the whole idea behind the name change is to recapture the magic of the original Hornets games and capitalizing on nostalgia, why not attempt to go for exactly the same experience as before? I'd be really upset if they start playing Katy Perry or LMFAO during timeouts.

One thing I think can be pretty guaranteed at this point...the first home game for the CHARLOTTE HORNETS is going to be absolutely fucking nuts.

If the fat guy who did flips is still alive (not likely) and agile enough (even less likely), then Steve Martin might have grown hair, Scott Burrell might get to bang George shinns girlfriend, and Gil mcgregor might crack a funny joke.

Is that Kelly Tripuka minus the perm in that picture with muggsy and dell curry?
