Wake - UNC Greensboro Game Thread

I love this BKF vs. Strickland tilt

thank you ogboards for the great xmas gift

He's like Dabo Swinney except he sucks at recruiting and is an asshole instead of a country bumpkin.

College teams practice freethrows at every practice, especially bad Free throw shooting teams. Game variables and 10+ years of bad form muscle memory aren't as easily overcome as the BKFs of the world might believe. Old white dudes are fucking excellent at freethrows because they spent years of their lives practicing them, while younger athletic (read: black) players spent their lives playing pickup where there are no fouls and certainly no pussy ass freethrows. Practicing freethrows as a kid generally requires your own basketball goal or an abundance of supervised time in an empty gym

Basketball. It'll be "closer than the experts" think.*

*I am one of the most outspoken and ardent BuzzOuters on the boards. I think he sucks. I've been against the hire since minute one. However, UNC has been very volatile this year, we are excellent at home, and it's a rivalry game. We will play them close.

If you average all four of Sagarin's rating systems, Carolina is ahead of us by 5.2 points on a neutral court.

#doesnotunderstandratings

Sorry, Bob, that's not how this works...
Sagarin said:
In PURE_ELO, only winning and losing matters; the score margin is of no consequence,
which makes it very good at retro-fitting the W-L results. However it is less accurate in its predictions for
upcoming games than is the PURE POINTS, in which the score margin is the only thing that matters.
PURE POINTS is also known as PREDICTOR, BALLANTINE, RHEINGOLD, WHITE OWL and is a very good PREDICTOR
of future games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GOLDEN_MEAN also utilizes the actual SCORES of the games in a different way but is also completely SCORE BASED
and thus should be a good match for the PURE POINTS in terms of predictive accuracy for upcoming games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The overall RATING is a synthesis of the three different methods, with more weight to the two SCORE-BASED methods
and thus should be a good predictor in its own right.

I would not draw that conclusion since we have won 9 games at home against very weak teams.

I suspect the line will be around 7 for the Wake-UNC game and I believe that it will be a single digit game.

This doesn't mean we're good or that UNC is bad, this is just what normally happens when two conference teams play each other. We may have all forgotten this since we haven't been a normal team the past three years.

absolutely. 1 game against a quality opponent is not enough to deem a team good, bad, or ugly.

I believe the line on the Carolina game could be subject to a great deal of change between now and then.

Well, it's a free country, so it's nice to have an opinion on something that you know absolutely nothing about, I suppose.

Tell ya what I'll do, though. That was almost 50 years ago, but if you're ever in the area, we'll go a a gym somewhere and I will shoot 30 free throws...and I'll bet ya that I make at least 20 of them. That's 67% now, almost 50 years later. Wake Forest players on full scholarships made 13 out of 30 yesterday...43%. That's totally inexcusable....and it's totally the players' fault, not the coaches.

As I said, shooting free throws isn't that difficult. You have to concentrate and use sound fundamentals. Eliminate all that extra motion....you can't make them if your arms, head and elbows are moving all around when you shoot....and repeat the same way of shooting them over & over. It's just like making 4-foot putts. Use as little motion as possible and repeat your stroke.

Classic fan coach argument. No chance you would make 20/30. Hell I am still a really good basketball player and I probably make 22-25. Old guys think they can hit free throws because it is the one thing they can relate to. Put em on the line and the might make 15. I've seen his scenario play out a half a dozen times.

Free throws are a lot harder than a 4 foot straight putt.

Eh...maybe...we have one game on the road against a team who we will likely be within 5 or 10 points of either way and UNC plays two scrubs. Not much will change in two weeks.
