Wake - Virginia Tech Game Thread

It is pretty clear that bkf has tertiary neurosyphilis. Most likely he contracted this condition while "serving" in the army a fact which he so likes to trot out during political debates within the politics board. This diagnosis is based off timing, approximately 30 years ago contraction of this disease from a Filipino hooker, as well as the symptoms of confusion, dementia, irritability, and moodiness. I would say you probably should get it checked out, but at this stage of the disease all but too late.

Nope, it was the 4 year team that would have led us about to where we are right now unless it was supplemented by more talent. Dino under Skip had a track record of supplementing foundational classes with elite talent.

[Redacted] destroyed whatever foundation (however weak you think it might have been) that class had and then failed to bring in elite talent. [Redacted]'s foundational class is not much stronger than Dino's last class and certainly far weaker than other foundational classes in recent Wake history. On top of that he has failed to surround that class with elite talent.

Dino's record of "elite talent." The class before the 5-man class was Ari, CJ, and Konner Tucker. The class before that was also Skip's last class - Ty Walker, Aminu, and Woods. One of those worked out. Dino was let go in March of 2010. The class of 2010, which was already wrapped up was the JT/Derosiers class. Recruiting of high school players occurs in their sophomore through senior years. By the end of their junior year, a lot of great players have already committed. Who were we involved with in their junior year for the 2011 class? Green committed in the fall of 2010. Chase Fischer committed in May 2010. The assistants had been retained. Many are quick to praise the assistants for recruiting around here. But clearly Fischer had been recruited by the previous staff in some respects. Where were all the top recruits that Dino was recruiting before being let go that Buzz declined to offer? That first class under Buzz was clearly a mix of Dino/Buzz efforts. Buzz's first full class was the current sophs. I'm disappointed that we didn't reign in some other top flight talent to go with Shelton but we shall see.

Is the guy who picks "win shares" the same person who formula says Tony C and Carson are having better offensive years than Devin?

Nope. First off noone "picks" win shares. It's a formula. Second, as I already mentioned it's not divided by minutes played. It's a total.

And if you would bother to go to the site and look you would see that win shares matches up pretty well with what people see. The cumulative effect though just doesnt match the narrative we have heard for the past four years.

I would assume that Dino did some of the recruiting while Skip was coach as well, which is what RC107 was referring to. The fact of the matter is that [Redacted] inherited players that were not suited to his style of coaching. We do not know how those players would have turned out under Dino or anyone else. The only thing we can say with certainty is that the existing players and [Redacted] were largely unable or unwilling to achieve success together. I disagree that Dino shoulders any responsibility in [Redacted]'s first class. As I mentioned, the type of player Dino would have recruited is very different than the type to fit in to [Redacted]'s style. [Redacted]'s recruiting during his time at Wake has been suspect, primarily for his inability to fill specific needs on the roster. This has been exacerbated by the number of transfers while he has been coach. Ultimately, [Redacted] has to be judged by the body of work he has completed, not on conjecture about what might have been. In that light, [Redacted]'s recruiting has been mediocre and his coaching has been poor. In 3.5 seasons, [Redacted] has yet to return Wake to the point at which he got the job, much less build upon that, which was the point of hiring him in the first place.

As for your comments about past coaches, I strongly disagree with them. Yes, there has been the occasional person that had an agenda against each of those coaches you mentioned, but there has never been anything like the immediate, widespread disdain for [Redacted]. Other coaches were given time by the fanbase as a whole for varying reasons, from low expectations to past success. Things are so bad now partially because welcome to the internet, but also because no coach has performed as poorly as [Redacted] has. Not only did he coach perhaps the worst team in ACC history his first season, but this was after following two straight NCAA appearances. There is no metric visible to fans by which [Redacted] can be deemed successful, and there is no justification apparent for him keeping his job. The next coach will get significant leeway because of how far down [Redacted] has dragged the bar, but still needs to meet certain minimum thresholds. If the next coach can't beat teams like Stetson and Presby, it will probably be a tough road for him as well.

I love how MichDeac keeps on trotting out the Ari and CJ class as some evidence of poor recruiting when both were significant contributors as freshman to an NCAA 2nd round 20 win team. If anything, that shows the unfairness of judging how Dino would have done with the following class just based on speculation.

Tested positive for Adderall but won a chain of custody appeal.

A minor clarification -- he reportedly tested positive for adderall. We don't actually know what he tested positive for, as a provision in the NFL CBA prohibits disclosure of the offending substance for any positive drug test.

It's widely speculated that players who test positive for anything have their agents or "camps" leak to the media reports that they violated something perceived as relatively benign, like adderall, to quash speculation that they might've taken something far more "serious" or "hardcore." Not saying this is what RS did, just throwing it out there.

Because it's clear. Ari was nothing more than a spot-up 3-pt shooter. When he was asked to expand his game, he either didn't put in the work to do so or had no ability to do so. In the following year, this was exposed. And if you look at his record at USC, it becomes even more apparent that he was not able to become more than that/keep himself on the team. CJ was also great as a spot-up 3-pt shooter when he was a freshman. He expanded his game but was still more of a complimentary player on a good team.

If anything, you guys imagining how these players, who haven't been able to put it together at other schools, would somehow have combined their forces into Voltron under Dino Gaudio is just ludicrous.

9 points and 4.4 boards playing for the worst coach in ACC history. Ari got a really shitty rap for how he played his last year at Wake.

Maybe that's somewhat Bzzzz's fault, but Stewart didn't play with much effort. He also put up a 84.7 offensive rating in 2011, dropping from 94.8 his freshman year. For reference, the only guy on this year's team with a lower offensive rating that Stewart's 2011 is Madison Jones.

I like that bkf's definition of being a thug includes being falsely accused of sexual assault.

Prolly also includes fathering a child you did not know you fathered and failed to protect from death at the hands of a murderer because you knew nothing about the child.

Also, MichDeac is building quite the rep in under 100 posts. Is that you, Nina?

The only thing that is clear is that Ari wanted nothing to do with playing for [Redacted].

People aren't saying that Dino would have gone to the final four if he hadn't been fired. They are saying he would have gotten more out of that team, because they were players recruited by him to play in his style. They were not recruited to play [Redacted]'s style, and that showed. Dino probably would have been around .500 with that team and been fired after that, which is how it should have gone down. [Redacted] was set up to fail by Wellman and he was unable to overcome that because he is a bad coach.

Wake was associated at various points (to varying degrees) with the following top 100 players. I have listed their names, rank, and commit date.

4. Quincy Miller, October 2010
18. Jabari Brown, October 2010
24. Kyle Wiltjer, August 2010
27. Dorian Finney-Smith, September 2010
29. Nick Johnson, September 2010
38. Quinn Cook, October 2010
52. Jabarie Hinds, October 2010
53. Deuce Bello, October 2010
69. Julian Royal, October 2010
77. Ryan Boatright, October 2010
81. Naadir Tharpe, October 2010

That's 11 top 100 players that Dino had established relationships with and who were interested to varying degrees and all committed at least 4 months after [Redacted] took the job. Buzz either failed to sign them or decided to move in another direction

That other direction was Daniel Green, Chase Fischer, and Anthony Fields. Good job, good effort, Buzzy.

Ari was straight up flaunting a red USC hat all over campus the last month of his sophomore year. Couldn't wait to get the hell away from Bzzz.

Everybody I talked to thought for certain that Deuce Bello was in the bag. The coaching staff was in tight with him.
