Official Spring Football 2014 Thread (Spring Game Saturday at 2:00)

Agree with Loh- That we have ling about limited talent can surprise no one. That we are extremely weak offensively can surprise no one. The surprise is that any of us would be surprised. The difference is Clawson and staff are doing something about it unlike our last staff. They are going to need a little time but I believe we will be competitive again- recruiting is everything and that has to pick up, Seems like it is- we are going to have to sign some of these guys we are talking to. I do expect to see a better organized aggressive team out there this year.

I'm afraid that our poor recruiting, especially at key positions, in the later Grobe years will take a lot of time to rectify. Vince Lombardi couldn't turn this team around in one season. Players are just too far away.

Clawson is already bringing in some of his recruits. His 2015 team will be about 40% Clawson recruits. Now they will all be true freshmen, true sophomores, and redshirt freshmen but they will be handpicked by Clawson.

My main takeaway today is that a freshman could absolutely be starting at quarterback.

Which would be a particularly damning statement about Grobe's recruiting after four years of a guy who started as a true freshman.

And Clawson knew this. That's why he recruited two QBs.

My point isn't recruiting, it's player development. This roster has more three stars than any that Grobe had, up until last spring. I'm comparing apples-to-apples. Have these players improved at all ? An old coaching saying goes; "A player can get 4 years of experience in a career, or he can get one year of experience 4 times." Thanks LOBO, you got what you deserve!

Grobe said he was a big fan of his RS Frosh and true Frosh last year. Admitted that RS jr and sophomore were weak.

Winning with primarily sophs and freshman is a rare occurrence. If we are going to win in the next couple of years, we are going to have to get production from our upperclassmen. Unfortunately, their seems to be dearth of real players in those classes.

This is going to be a marathon, not a sprint.

Another job?

Sounds like what one might say if they are trying to excuse the present and buy some time.

It is appalling how the former staff allowed the skilled positions to be diminished so drastically!

Yeah, from what I witnessed on Saturday, brace yourselves for 2-10 or 3-9, boys. I know there's time to get better, but damn, Saturday was ugly (as expected). The skill positions on offense are just decimated, and I'm very scared what our run defense will be like without Nikita in the middle.

I understand but IMO, Whitlock's primary value was penetration/pressuring the QB in passing situations and his side to side pursuit of the ball carrier. He often got pushed back on straight ahead power runs where his size got exposed. Obviously, we'll miss his intensity.

You just wonder why? Too lazy? Unable to identify talent? Just hard to believe they let things side so much. Of course, Lobo never did recruit many decent offensive linemen and then never developed what he had. Hard to believe anyone gave him a job

Wake's starting QB in 2014 will be a true freshman. The nice runners at QB now on the roster really have not shown any throwing accuracy, and that is not going to get any better by September 2014.

I have it on pretty good authority that Little Looney is transferring. Take that for what it's worth. . .

Remember what Gospower said after he transferred. He said that the staff was never upset after a loss. They knew that Grobe would protect them no matter what. They lost the hunger for success after they achieved it.
