Almost punched a guy last night

If this thread is a case study in anything, it's a case study in where you live and where you grew up.

How so? I think these experiences are pretty ubiquitous across the country, in cities and suburbs. How people react to it doesn't seem to be geographically assigned either.

Pretty sure I come across more panhandlers in a week than Jeff Fatt does in a year, so no.

I thought about punching the guy that called me a white devil and yelling that I was God's swift retribution for his blasphemous ways, but then I just decided not to do that and proceed with my day.

if you're a grown man, there should be a very short list of things that would justify a fist fight in a grocery store parking lot

because he called me a fucking faggot. I didn't care for the comment.

You acted like an asshole. You could have smiled and said "gotta go" or "have a good day" , but you wanted to be confrontational.

I disagree with BDZ. I think the appropriate penalty would be Jeff gets like at super max with the guy as his jailer. Then we'll see if Jeff is pleasant to him.

Most social workers I have talked to have always advised me to never give these people money - it will go for drugs or alcohol. I had one guy give me a few copies of his card with directions to a shelter and said to hand that out instead so they can seek help.

If these people are not homeless and desperate and are just running a scam to get money then they perhaps deserve to be punched - though I would not advise anyone doing so.

The saddest thing I heard was a kind-hearted friend of mine who saw a guy by the road with one of the "homeless, hungry, please help" signs. So she went to a grocery store and bought a bag of stuff and took it to him. As she gave it to him he started picking things out and complaining about this or that item that he didn't like or couldn't eat or whatever. Last time she did that.

first week after my sister moved to DC we walked into a 7/11 and the guy out front asked if one of us would buy him a hotdog. my sister said she would but when inside said he should have a banana instead, so bought that despite me saying he would reject it for sure. she said nah he'll appreciate it. sure enough the dude was like "what the fuck, I thought I was getting a hotdog!" last time she did that.

to be fair, that's a pretty awful swap if she told him she'd get him a hotdog.

haha I know. she's into eating healthy and was like he needs the potassium! he doesn't know it but he'll appreciate it more!

and I'm like nope nope nope. dude wants a hotdog.

Downtown Atlanna is crawling with panhandlers and homeless. Panhandlers generally are not aggressive. There is a blind lady I see regularly on my trips to the courthouse that I always kick change to.

The gas station / grocery store folks are a different breed though. They are scammers, and are typically anywhere from annoying and pushy to aggressive. I came across a bro doing this at a gas station a few months ago. I knew it was bullshit but I went inside and put $10 on his pump bc there were two elderly ladies in his car.

yep, and i'm also not sure a banana would be more filling than a hotdog.

I actually just remembered the one time I saw someone fly off the handle at a panhandler. Some crazy old homeless guy called a gay man a faggot outside a corner store, and the guy whipped around and knocked him out cold. Homeless guy was in really rough shape, taken away on a stretcher. Gay guy was really torn up about it and of course was arrested.

To be fair, 99.9% of dudes would be pissed about that swap. BBD would probably think the shape was close enough, but that's about it.

yes I know. as I said, I knew he would reject it outright. she was naive having just moved there that week.

I just sorta shook my head and laughed when she tried to give it to him

fuck potassium. if you're hungry enough to ask strangers for food outside of gas station, you need calories (from something other than alcohol), not potassium. bananas aren't that great a source of potassium anyway. you'd have to eat a 5-foot long banana just to get your RDA.

BBD eats... ah, never mind.

That's what I've always been told as well. There is a homeless Vietnam veteran in my hometown that lives downtown. He is crazy and so they will not let him into the homeless shelter in town. Knowing this and knowing that he is harmless, a lot of the downtown merchants feed the guy. One new merchant didn't understand why he wasn't at the shelter or at the VA in the psych ward, so he took him both places and was denied getting him in for shelter. The guy is left to live on the streets because he is not mentally sound to hold a job and no where will take him in. I've sometimes brought him food and he is always grateful.

The panhandlers in Winston have gotten bad. I had one that stood behind my car in order to prevent me from leaving when I told her I didn't carry any cash, which is true. I was trying to wait for the car in front of me to leave, but it never did so I called the police and they escorted her away. She was still standing behind my car when they pulled in.
