Good bourbon

I haven't seen it yet but $23 for a 750 mil is kind of steep. My go to bourbon for mixing is Evan Williams BIB (white label) and its $24 for a 1.75mil. You can't beat it.

Yeah I saw it at my local store last night and was interested to try it, but EW BiB is my standard as well and it is cheaper. I think the JB was like $16-17 for 750mL. Almost as much as the black label.

My booty from my weekend in Kentucky...

Blanton's
W.L. Weller 12 year
Four Roses Barell Strength Gift Shop Selection
Wild Turkey Forgiven 2013
Old Grand Dad 114 (3 bottles)
Heaven Hill BIB
Old Fitzgerald (2 bottles)
Rebel Reserve Small Batch

Had to cut the trip short. Left out this AM because of incoming weather. Stopping to grab a bite of lunch now.

All in all, the trip was awesome! Buffalo Trace was my favorite stop.

Buffalo Trace offers free tours and ends with a tasting. They have a bourbon cream that the wife fell in love with. The best tour we went on overall in our opinion, especially since it was free.

Four Roses charged $5, but included a tasting and a free glass that you used during the tasting. Essentially, another free tour.

Only did a tasting "tour" at Wild Turkey. Full tour was $10, I think.

Visited Woodford Reserve but did not tour. $10 also, I think.

Heaven Hill was $10 and included a tasting. Not a whole lot of difference in information from the other two tours, except for the history of the actual distillery.

Bulleit at the old Stizel-Weller distillery was $10. Very cool tour. Included a tasting. Got to see Pappy's old office which is now the office of head honcho for Bulleit (his name escapes me at the moment). The barrels left in the rick houses when Stizel-Weller quit distilling were/areused for the Orphan bourbon. Pretty cool to learn that. When they quit distilling, they couldn't take what was in the rick houses so when Bulleit took it over, they acquired it.

I'm sure this has been addressed but what are thoughts on Henry McKenna Single Barrel?

Recently got into this arena, and am a neophyte - what's the difference between whiskey and bourbon? Bought some Crown Royal Reserve. That considered good stuff? Don't really know which way is up in this field.

You might get a lot out of reading some of the early pages of this thread. The vast majority of us were huge noobs, and now we are slightly less noob-ish because some of the bourbon experts around here -- BearsNDeacs, notably, in particular -- schooled us in the ways of the gods' nectar.

Short version is that there are specific ingredients and rules about how to distill whiskey in order for it to be considered bourbon.

Very much inspired by the posts on here, my favorite bourbons are:

Four Roses Single Barrel
Four Roses Small Batch
Smooth Ambler Old Scout
Breckenridge

This.

Also, as I was told as a noob, there is no wrong way to drink bourbon. Drink it how YOU like it. I started with a couple cubes and a splash of water. Then dropped the water. Now, a cube or two depending on the size of my pour and after this weekend I have found that I am starting to enjoy bourbon neat.

Anyone else drinking tonight with lots of work on the Southeast being cancelled? Smooth Ambler private pick in the glass for me right now.

I basically read this thread end to end like a year and a half ago when I was really getting into it. A huge wealth of knowledge here. Just ignore RJ's posts (as usual).

Picked up some good ones...glad you had a good time!

Eh kind of but the Leopold Brothers really mixes it up. It's an herbal liqueur that pulls from herbs above tree line in Colorado.

I've never had their liqueur. Have some of their whiskey but haven't poured it in at least a year. Can't remember the last time I poured something less than 100pf while at home

How was it? I haven't pulled the trigger on any of their other stuff. They've got a ton of offerings.
