Richmond @ Wake Forest - 7pm - ESPN3 - Prediction/Game Thread

So you expect him to play an entire game with seven players? Trent Van Horn HAS to play or else we have one point guard and one shooting guard. What do you not understand about that? OBrien shouldn't be playing at all, but Crawford and Wilbekin can't play 40 minutes every single game. Obviously losing isn't fun, but you have to be reasonable when we're playing without two of our starters, one being our best player.

VH should play 10 not 30 minutes and Obrien zero.

Just because the best player is out and a starter is out doesn't mean that you can just excuse him altogether.

The walk-ons have to play, but they don't have to play 34 minutes out of 200 when Collins and Moore (two scholarship players) play 18 total.

In all fairness, there is zero overlap in the minutes that VanHorn gets vs those of Collins/Moore. We have three real players that play the 1, 2, and 3 - so VanHorn is going to have to play when we need to rest any one of Crawford, Wilbekin, or McClinton. I just don't see any way you can play Dinos, Thomas, or Collins at the 3, especially on the defensive side against a team like Richmond. Now I don't agree with VanHorn getting minutes over McClinton down the stretch.

We went to zone, we could have played McClinton, Thomas, and Moore with the two starting guards. We could have also hidden Dinos in that same zone too.

Maybe you missed it but Coach K's 7 are usually all burger boys. Not really a fair comparison.

I'm not saying he should play 30 minutes, but even if he only plays 10 that's 35 a piece for both Crawford and Wilbekin. That will catch up to anyone for the most part. TVH also played better defense and had less turnovers than Dinos. He isn't as big of an offense threat obviously but Dinos play is inexcusable so far this year.
Also, I completely agree that OBrien should be getting zero minutes.

You can play with 7 easily. Perhaps some of you missed that the defending ACC Champions only used 7 players the entire ACC tournament and in their run to the elite 8. Other NCAA tournament teams play with basically 6 regularly.

So you are saying that McClinton and the two starting guards should all play 40 minutes? The fact is those guys probably need at least 3 minutes rest each half. That means that VanHorn has to play at least 18 minutes right now. I don't like it, but that is the way it is right now. Actually, the person that probably cost us the game the most tonight is Hudson. Whatever selfish/stupid shit that he did really put his teammates in a bind.

And their 7 tend to be better than the 7 we have right now. The stench of Redacted and his shit Recruiting lives on.
Name a team who could lose 2 starters and not miss a beat?

I'll hold judgement until we're at full strength for a game, but as others have said...we shouldn't need "full strength" to beat Richmond. Still think this team has a chance to make noise but we need to win ALL of the "winnable" games. Tough loss tonight.

Just got back from the game. As a long time Wake Forest fan I've never seen/heard such a dead crowd (yes I'm talking about you fan behind me)...add to this were the folks who were busy texting and a game where we missed 14 free throws and had 20 turn overs, no defensive effort and rotations that boggle the mind.

I can understand running a zone to stay out of foul trouble and maybe rest a little but I don't understand a 2-3 rather than a 3-2 or 1-3-1. And yeah maybe teams can win with 7 players, but I would be surprised if they could win with 7 players when 2 of their starters are missing. How is this so difficult to understand? It's really baffling honestly.

Yeah, even in our better years we've played tight with Richmond. So we do need full strength to beat them. Reference last year as recent example

Well yeah, but you can still only play 7 in college basketball. Richmond only had 7 guys that played more than 6 minutes tonight.

The same argument was made for [Redacted]..."no one could win with these guys".

Of course we will miss a beat missing two starters. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't be playing better with what we have.

And even if we only play 7 players, VanHorn would still have to be one of those 7, since he is the only guard sub we have right now.

No one is judging DM based on if we won or lost. We are judging the ridiculous lineups that were on the floor during the loss.

We were a really shitty team last year. We're supposed to be better this year.

From a depth standpoint sure it can be done. But missing two starters and having 7 isn't the same as playing with 7 solid players.
