Wake Forest Football Recruiting

Yeah, as I‘ve posted on other threads, I expect us to take a step back at QB next year, which is to say a step back offensively. Would love for Hinton or one of the other QBs to prove me wrong.

I think Wolford will be on staff next year as a QB coach. Kid is going to get paid as a coach. I found the Belk Bowl ESPN color guy fairly second rate and couldn't believe they gave Coach Jimbo essentially carte blanche for what seemed like a quarter, but I hadn't thought about Wolford's turnaround in NCAA historical terms until he started gushing about it (and the offense as a whole).

Historic season offensively. I have said over and over I thought our linebackers were as weak as we've had in a while, but I would not be surprised if we have a new DC next year. I did not think he clicked particularly well with our staff. No inside info so I could be way off. But we got progressively worse this year on defense. Some of that was a beat up defensive line, but still.

Agree. Hire slowly and fire quickly. Sawyel does not seem have "it". We had enough talent on Defense not to be giving up 35+ routinely.

I, too, was getting very tired of hearing the 'Jimbo Show' for way too long. I kept yelling at the tv to get Jimbo off and get back to the game. Anyway, all ended well for us.

Our DC was outstanding. He inherited terrible recruiting from several seasons ago at the linebacker position. This season was the fruit of that tree.

We gave up 35 four times. We were 2-2 in those games. We gave up 28.3 ppg.

This was a transition year for the defense. At least give Sawvel the chances we gave Ruggeiro.

Our corners played very well at times. Masterson and coby Davis got picked on quite a bit. The linebackers were decent against the run but had trouble in space. Remember Dawson was a walk on. He was a solid hole plugger but couldn't get out to flat quick enough. Jamboree was the same. The improvement of defensive line play at Wake has been perhaps the most impactful improvement over the past decade.

Ruggerio's 2 minute offense didn't help the defense much. I'm talking of his Hurry up 3 and outs, like the first two series of the bowl game.

Wolford, if he wants to Coach, will start out as a Grad Assistant somewhere. His career, intelligence, character and obvious great relationship with Clawson will get him an opportunity at Wake or somewhere else. Kid is a gamer.

Crystal Ball prediction for 3* 2019 local CB Jaquan McMillan. 5.5 on Rivals with offers from Wake, Duke, UL, South Carolina, Tennessee, Cuse, and UNC.

Yeah. you are right. Just surprised he could not manage more pressure on other team's QB, and we played the old Grobe 10 yards off your man soft pass defense. Hope we don't relive that for another decade as good QB's had all day and just picked us apart.

He would be a great addition.

We struggled with teams whose QB got rid of the ball quickly. Which happens to be many of the teams we play in the ACC. It nullified our pass rush that I felt was solid all year long.

Yep. And LBs play a big role in making sure QBs can’t complete quick passes.

In the second half on Friday we had a series (where aTm scored) where three of our four DBs were freshmen or RS fresh...Davis, Taylor & Grate. A lot of younger guys got to play. We lose four defensive starters this year. The key to next year will be an improved defense, since the offense will take a (hopefully, small) step back.

Yep. And Bates was injured in two of those games where we gave up 35 (ND and Cuse).

Well, the Hintonistas will have to make good on their assurances that he was indeed a better choice than Wolford. If they're to be shown "right", Kendall will lead the offense to greater heights. I certainly hope so, that'd be awesome. He'll clearly have a better receiver corps and OL than Wolford ever had.
