Wake Forest Football Recruiting

Coaches apparently mean a lot to players. We've seen many who value their position coach more than their alma mater itself.

Same thing happens in business.
Many people will follow their boss instead of sticking with the company.

Same thing happens in academia. Grad students will transfer to follow their mentor to a new university.

Same thing happens in religion. Just ask Jesus. Too bad about that Judas dude....

Saw that Christian Harris, highly regarded younger brother of Tylor Harris who played at Wake committed to Texas A&M. Elko's relationship with his brother was cited as a factor in him going there. Too bad he didn't follow his brother instead of his brother's coach.

LA is a lot different than NC and a long way away distance wise- the culture/connection to College Station, pit that A&M is, would seem to be a more comfortable fit for most of the kids from the Boot if they are considering leaving the state. I don't find this surprising. More surprising was Wake getting Tylor to NC. With his brother gone it seems A&M a more understandable choice for Harris the younger.

Just a little taste of what else Wake lost when Elko moved on. Haven't read anything similar about relatives of previous Sawvel players going to Wake because of Sawvel.

On the other hand we are on track to sign the most highly recruited class in WFU football history...

Haven't found a breakdown connecting the WF assistant in charge of recruiting each particular WF FB commit as that information usually comes out on signing day. That said, I'm sure Sawvel has been involved in a significant part of recruiting the current class.

FWIW, Mike Elko will be a head coach soon. Good coaches hire good assistants who climb the coaching ladder. Nothing, but a positive that Mike Elko left WF for big money jobs at ND and A&M. When Clawson has openings on his staff, he gets to choose who he wants to add rather than needing to recruit to fill spots on his staff.

As has been addressed many times in the past, for all of the great things that Grobe did, one of his ultimate failings was whiffing on several major assistant coaching positions.

No question that long term it is a positive. Just a minor short term loss in the brother of a guy who played at Wake following Elko, to his new coaching gig, and not coming to Wake.

If Clawson ever leaves us, I would be more than ecstatic to hire Elko as HC.

+1

I think his star is rising very quickly though. Wouldn't be surprised if he has a head coaching gig in the next couple of years. So, hopefully Clawson isn't leaving next year. If so, Elko would be my first call.

Grobe didn't want anyone who rocked the boat (i.e. pushed him to do better), or had original thoughts. Some of his replacement hires such as Lobo for Calhoun were just laughable.

Elko already makes almost the exact same ($1.8 M) as what Clawson is reported to make. Pretty crazy. Assuming he continues to succeed, someone will pay him $3 M+ as a head coach.

My top 3 choices to replace Claw if he were to leave:
1. Troy Calhoun
2. Coach at Navy
3. Elko

Why would any 4* WR want to play for Troy or Kenny?

Because they're winners and both run clean programs. I think both would adjust their offensive philosophy to the talent pool available. They don't get 4* receivers at Annapolis and AF, thus that's not what they build their O around. I was impressed with the O that Calhoun had here for a couple of seasons, and he coached in Denver and Houston where I doubt they were running much flexbone.

I just like Ken and like what he does at Navy.

Not sure why Elko would have 4* receivers beating down our door either.
