Wake Forest Football 2018 Offseason Discussion

I thought Washington missed some practice this week for an injury. Maybe I misread.

At this point if we just have an average to above average game manager at QB, a defense who knows their assignments, and a middle of the pack kicking game, then we will win 8-9 games.

I feel like our front 7 will get a lot of pressure on opposing QB’s and our Secondary will hold their own. Skill players will be top-5 ACC good. Offensive line will dominate and help our rushing game do the same.

All comes back to now t having drastic drop off in QB play. Should be a fun season nonetheless.

Man, I love reading this. Who'da thought LOWF would recruit and develop a dominant OL? :dancindeac:

With three out of the five preseason all-ACC picks, the "beef boys" are doing a lot of good work. Should make life a lot easier for the newby QBs. They won't be in survive first, play QB later mode the way Wolford was most of his career.

What does the future OL depth chart look like in 2019 and beyond? What can we expect the next 3 years?

It looks fairly solid but don't think it is going to reach the quality this current group will produce.

The good news is that they aren't having to play as inexperienced freshmen or sophomores.
The next group are all getting several years of strength and conditioning training as well as some playoff experience before they come in next year as starters. Not quite 'reloading' but hopefully not a tremendous drop off either.

We won't know until they are thrown into the fire but the 4 seniors, other than Herron, were NOBODIES. Haynes and Anderson were 2 stars and those 2 stars were probably just because they signed with us. Haynes had no other offers except to play BB at Liberty. Anderson had no other offers. Osterhage was a 2 star. Herron was a superstar in comparison as a mid level 3 star.

Benzinger is just a junior and another 2 star starter and Gilliam is in the rotation, another "superstar" with 3 stars.

So if we can turn these mostly nobodies into All ACC, there is not much to venture in saying the 3 stars on the roster in the next class (Suhren, Nash-who got some first team snaps in the scrimmage, and Watson) could rise to All ACC level. Again, we won't know if they have the heart and desire or the chip on their shoulders, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility either.

Young O-line guys getting small amounts of playing time as rfresh and rsoph ( and beginning this year as true frosh). So they will have personal experience of the size, speed and power of opponents defensive lines. That should be added incentive to work in the weight room and with their position coach on technique.

None of the young O-line guys should be needed thd year, barring injury. Most of them will have had two or three years to grow and develop before being expected to play much.

There are some young guys who were highly rated coming out of HS. We will see how the ratings translate to on field performance.

Another good thing about 2019 is we will not be breaking in a new QB to go along with inexperiened/freshman OL (regardless of who wins the QB battle). Both the QB and OL should be somewhat “experienced.”

WF has 8 OL that are either true or redshirt freshman, including Mike Edwards (6-6 325) who many raved about during the Shrine Bowl. Also, Sean Maginn is a sophomore who played as a true frosh last year; pretty impressive given the returning experience last year.

That's 9 OL candidates from the last two recruiting classes that will play minimally this year, but should be ready to contribute next year on top of the couple of returning regulars (Gilliam and Benzinger) and third year sophomores (Tyler Watson, Taleni Suhren, Je'Vointe Nash) that will be ready to man the OL in 2019. WF may take a slight step back in OL line play next year, but the roster is now in reload mode on the OL. The days of throwing guys out there before they are ready are over.

Bruce Feldman predicts a 6-6, 3-5 finish for Wake. His write-up via TheAthletic:

Dave Clawson has done a really nice job at Wake Forest. It doesn’t make matters easier in this deep division or that projected starting QB Kendall Hinton is suspended for the first three games that including a tricky opener at Tulane and a game against BC. Plus, Notre Dame is lurking in Hinton’s first game back.

Wolford and Hinton took the majority of the meaningful snaps at QB. I would still view our QBs as being fairly green at this point, but Clawson moving Hinton to WR says the kids must be ready.

I am talking 2019 (next season). Hinton/Hartman/Newman will be the starter. Along with Gilliam, Nash, Benzinger, and other OLs who have been in the program a while.

My bad. You are right. 2019 could shape up to be a magical season. We should still have a number of playmakers in 2019 as well.

Sorry to hear this. We're all looking for big things from him this year.
Glad surgery isn't needed and hope he can get back to 100% soon.

I'd like to take a moment to point out how well Clawson recruiting is going. Everybody, including me, applaud the 4* we get. But what I appreciate is his ability to keep the ship sailing forward. He has fewer "knotheads" than Grobe had. No mentions in the "Police Blotter". Recruits passing through rave about the "Family feeling" on the team. And I like how he would set up an academic pathway for the players. We are in good hands. In Claw We Trust.
