2020 Presidential Election: Biden v. Trump

On the anniversary of the Pulse shooting.

It fits with him going to the site of the Tulsa massacre on June Teenth and accepting the nomination on Ax Handle Saturday in the city of Ax Handle Saturday.

But he's not a racist or a bigot.

Of course Trump did, sadly this is what his base wants. It is all he has left now. He's gambling that a combo of 100% bigot Trump base turnout, voter suppression, and the EC will backdoor him into a second term. It is the only chance he has left.

60% of America despises him.

And sadly, the strategy you described just might still work and get him a second term, if they can find a way to limit Dem turnout (as we saw in GA) and maximize their own turnout. If it still looks bad for Trump in the polls by the early fall, it wouldn't be a surprise at all to see Trump just go full racist, homophobe, sexist culture warrior in an effort to stir up his base to new heights of fear and adoration. We could be hearing phrases and words and slogans that haven't been used in American politics, at least openly, in a long, long time.

Postponing his Tulsa rally from Juneteenth is a tacit acknowledgement that confrontational racial politics may not work. At least it may not work during a pandemic and economic crisis in which more people than ever are recognizing racial injustice.

If they’re changing rally dates for a holiday that is more acknowledged than celebrated and even then by only a small portion of the second largest minority group, they’re going to have a tough time keeping up a campaign fueled by white rage for the next 4+ months.

"GO"??? He used a quote from the brutal, racist Miami Chief of Police and George Wallace's dogs already.

Good post. They’re running out of grievance politics at a time when the entire nation is aggrieved about more serious things.

We've talked about this before. After Cville, Bannon commented that whenever race is a news topic, it was good for their side, and indeed, Trump's approval ratings rose in the 1-2 months after Cville. But it feels a bit different now. His numbers have dipped after Floyd's murder and the ensuing marching. Then the church photo op backfired, and now the Juneteenth dogwhistle rally is moved. Even my evangelical parents recognize how awful Floyd's murder was. They don't care for the marching, and hate the rioting, but at least they are finally coming around to understanding there is a problem. (And it's better that the last week or 2 have mostly been nonviolent because then we can talk about it in a less threatening way.) I hope it is and stays different.

Out of curiosity, what has Fox's coverage of the protests been like? I read the other day that Carlson has lost a sponsor or 2.

Can’t believe Demings made it past the first round of vetting

Just two years ago she tried to pass a bill that would have made violence against a police officer a federal hate crime

Not the moment for this, Joe

I worry that Biden sees this as a plus, though, as a subtle dog whistle to the center left and right that he's not falling for the Black Lives Matter moment.

Old conniving sinister Joe, right?

It's simpler and less evil than that. I'm sure his people think Demings gives them a two-fer. Black woman for BLM and a cop for the law and order types. Problem is that Demings will be held accountable for every officer-involved incident under her watch.

I think the last three weeks should have eliminated Warren, Klob, Harris, and Demings from the list. They just don't fit the zeitgeist. Warren had the campaign's worst misstep on race and she's as likely as Biden to put her foot in her mouth on these issues. She's not going to help Biden get the earned media he needs to compete with Trump. It's just not the time for a former DA without a strong record on police brutality or a police chief.

Yeah but for whatever reason his campaign is aimed at making happy the people that are already the happiest with him

That's why he has 30 yo, former Bernie Campaign Manager, Symone Sanders as a Campaign Manager and primary voice of the campaign. He also added ultra-progressive Karine Jean-Pierre as a senior advisor.

But of course, nothing he does matters.
