Official Clemson vs. Wake Game Thread - 7:49 on ABC

Greene, Morin, and Robinson have nice speed. We just need to get them the ball. I'd really like to see more creative ways to get the receivers involved. QB play was fine. CBS and Walker were fine although Walker just has "it." The OL play was problematic. I'm not going to be too worried about that though until after next week.

I’m curious as to why Roberson has never played wideout. He’s 6’1” and has long arms. And Groulx looks too short and slow to be a wideout- at least against Clemson athleticism.

Yeah. I think Roberson could move outside as well. Seems pretty straight forward to start those three guys at WR.

It's worth it to take the time and appreciate how far the WR position has come in a short period of time where we can lose four big contributors in two years and still have what looks like good young starters.

The bad: AT can’t catch, Groulx didn’t look ready for physical corners and didn’t look as quick as I thought he would, I’m worried about depth.

The good: Greene is a monster, Morin looks like our slot for the next 5 years and the guy that will drive State fans crazy, and Roberson has big play potential. Oh, and AT can get separation, just catch the ball.

Refs definitely swallowed the whistle against Clemson. Was pretty pissed about it at first but as the game went on saw that it wouldn't have mattered. This will be Clemson's best offense in my prediction. Hope Clawson sends in the tape and if we get some of the same officials, they decide to do some make up calls next week against the wolf pups

Clawson and staff has shown a pretty good ability to recruit skill players on offense. Walker definitely struggles in pass protection.

Our secondary...oh man. Not only were they bad, most of the time they weren’t even on the screen when a receiver caught the ball.

Obviously was not thrilled with our pass coverage (or any of the D really) but I do think a big contributor was just getting absolutely zero pressure on Lawrence. Sooo many times he just stood there all day waiting for guys to get open. I know Basham is going to get doubled a lot so we need to find somebody else to step up or bring more pressure or something. Was hoping for better against a Clemson line that had turned over basically completely.

All that being said, we knew drawing Clemson first coming off an...um...unusual offseason replacing by far our best offensive player would be a very challenging task. Time for the team to regroup and see where we really stand next week and beyond. No other team really scares me right now.

But they don’t call every one

If the officials are unfairly letting Clemson getting away with bullshit then opposing coaches have a choice:

1. Let it happen; or
2. Call them out on it.

Seems we’re choosing #1

Claws on let’s the officials have it during games. I doubt he’s staying quiet about the lack of calls

Maybe now we know why Clawson didn’t answer the question on Game Day about which unit matched up best with Clemson. I thought it would be the DL

This- Claws on let’s the officials have it during games. I doubt he’s staying quiet about the lack of calls- what more can he do? The fix is in- the ACC (and SEC) made schedules giving, what are perceived the top teams, easy slates to play and punished lower perceived teams horrible schedules to jockey for position at the end of the year for the playoffs if we get that far. To think the officials are not part of leaning in the direction of the "top" teams is wishful thinking. The ACC needs an undefeated and seemingly untested Clemson. Ditto ND. It is all a set-up driven by $$$.

If there was ever a year for the ACC to set the schedule up completely to try to get a certain outcome, it’s this year. One non-con game, no divisions, and 10 conference games. We got screwed along with a couple of other teams. All the more reason I think for Clawson to be real aggressive in games where can play spoiler. If we don’t make a bowl this year, who cares, I’d much rather knock ND or UNC off their yellow brick road laid out for them to the title game to play Clemson.

The refs did not cause us to lose to Clemson. To say that would be something that a unc fan would be saying today. However I disagree completely that "it wouldn't have mattered." It matters a great deal. If you take away all the PI penalties that were allowed to go on, it likely puts a couple of more scores on the board. It at least extends some drives and slows Clemson down a little in the first half. And it opens our play book a little bit. It would have made a huge difference in the first quarter and half. Then you add in all the holds on the interior and ends, that prevented possibly drive ending sacks or would have nullified 30 yard runs around the edge, and maybe that slows Clemson down a little too. It's not ok to say Clemson is better and was going to win anyway (which they would have), it robbed viewers of a more interesting competitive game, and a better showing for a program who is trying to get better. It's hard to do anything productive when you can interfere and hold with impunity. It was disgraceful.

What can Claw do? He can make it public. Yeah, I know there are fines. He makes alot of money. Maybe boosters could pitch in. The referees are not part of a grand conspiracy, but they do "lean" in the direction of the stronger team. If no one calls them out and punishes them then it will just go on and on. Their performance deserves an absolute ass chewing from the director of officials. But it won't come, because the league will say nothing. There is plenty of video evidence for Wake and Claw to make a public statement as well as an official complaint. I know it's not the "Wake Way" but I think it should be done.

This is not to take anything away from Clemson. They are in a different league. But in the spirit of collegiate competition that was a disgrace yesterday.

Any other team than Wake Forest would be lighting up social media, etc. over the officiating yesterday. How many times do the announcers come back from commercial, and bring in a rules analyst to discuss a missed PI call that would have likely resulted in points? It happened on national TV twice last night. And there were plenty of others that could have been looked at. Boogie got tackled behind one time with a straight shot at Lawrence.

As frustrating as Perry was yesterday we need to remember that Scotty started the same way. The fact that he got behind the Clemson D and had a TD in hand but for hands. I agree on the PI calls but I think that would have meant more Of their first team O which was slicing and dicing our D. I think Perry is talented we just need to have some patience with him. I will wait to call out the D until we play some teams that are not going to send double digit players to the NFL every year. We didn’t get hurt and they allowed us to make it “respectable” at the end. No injuries and getting more players back sounds good to me.

Perry will be fine. That pass was almost too perfect - lots of air under it, seemed like it took forever to drop into (and through) his hands. When you've got a Clemson defender breathing down your neck it's pretty easy to lose focus.

More importantly, while it was nice to see Kern make some great throws against the subs, Hartman throwing for 182 with no picks and making something out of nothing a number of times with Greene is going to look a LOT better against teams that aren't #1 in the country.

Washington had stone hands and was always injured. I hope Perry is better.

Tyler Williams along with 3 other D-lineman weren’t able to play last night, Covid related? Not having Williams and. Bothroyd hurts up front.

With Wake's first drive of the game and the obvious Roberson "missed" PI costing points, immediately showed how desperate the ACC is to protect clem's son. No way LOWF was going to be allowed to gain any momentum by scoring first.

To paraphrase Hanlon, “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.”

There is no way the refs were able to think fast enough in the moment to hold or throw flags to favor Clemson. I just think they weren’t very good and were letting a lot of things go. Wake should’ve taken advantage by being more handsy on defense, but to do that we would’ve had to be within arms reach of their receivers. Which we weren’t.

That's exactly what was happening. I'm not saying the referees were conspiring, they just weren't making obvious calls. While I think the refs did a terrible job, it's not because they aren't good, they have been evaluated over and over again on those kinds of plays to reach the ACC level. It is very difficult to move up to that level, and everyone of those referees has the ability to look at those plays, evaluate it in a split second and make a decision. This wasn't being handsy, these were very clear penalties that take away the offense's ability to make plays. Not one time did a Clemson back turn around to make a play on the ball. Washington and Surratt were very physical and could get up and fight for balls, that's how they caught most of their passes last year, not from separation. Wake throws alot of come back or back shoulder passes. That's our passing scheme, and Clemson came in to take that away. The problem is they did it blatantly illegally and the refs let them do it.

There were multiple times Sam had time to throw, made catchable throws, and our receivers were physically impeded from making a play on the ball without the defenders even making an attempt on the ball. That has to be called every single time, I don't care who is playing.

And I just don't get the "it doesn't matter in the end" mentality. That is what Clemson fans were posting during the game, too. But it does matter. Our offense could have scored more points in the first half, and looked pretty good at times...on national TV. We would have lost the game but there would be way more for our offense to build on moving forward, and it would have looked much more competitive at least for the first couple of quarters on ABC, which matters a lot for our program. Clemson should have to beat us fairly (which they would have) but they didn't. That takes away from Clemson, Wake Forest, and the game in general.
